On a flush or clad door, the wall should read as one surface. A visible hinge breaks that. The hinge has to carry the weight and control the movement.

Door weight is the figure most schedules record. It is rarely the figure that determines the specification.

As a door increases in width, the load sits further from the hinge line. Leverage on the hinge increases, and the top hinge carries the greatest share.

Two doors of identical weight can place entirely different demands on their hinges. Applied hardware increases the difference further.

Door properties and applied hardware are two of the four factors examined in the SIMONSWERK CPD seminar.

SIMONSWERK has launched a new RIBA approved CPD for architects and specifiers.

Four factors determine what a hinge is required to do on any project. Environment, door properties, applied hardware and fire safety.

Most hinge issues identified on site originate in one of the four changing after the hinge was selected. A closer added following sign off of the ironmongery schedule. A leaf increased during design development. A specification that progressed while the hardware did not.

The seminar sets out a framework for assessing all four at design stage.
