We are lucky to have both management and engineers who have decades of hands on testing experience. This means they also have decades of learning how not to do something and the tips and tricks that can save time and minimise errors.

As with many regions across Europe, the UK has suffered a number of summer wildfires as a result of the long hot dry summer. Over the last 2 weeks Suffolk has seen a major incident with a wildfire that has consumed 150 hectares of heathland and woodland around Dunwich Heath, this is one of the worst fires this year.

Supporting all 35 of Suffolk's fire stations and 600 fire fighters was Kemo Ltd's very own Iain Moffat who was part of East Suffolk RAYNET, part of RAYNET-UK, the Radio Amateurs' Emergency Network.

Working at Dunwich at the request of Suffolk County Council to build, install and operate a site wide secure radio network to address limited coverage of normal cellular, Airwave and hand-held radios in the incident area and to enable communications between agencies with no compatible radio equipment. Around 20 RAYNET members supported the installation, operation and maintenance of the system 24/7 in shifts from 5pm on 2nd August until stood down at 5pm on 10th August with up to 40 UHF digital mobile radio handsets in the field with separate channels for firefighting operations and site security.

RAYNET was set up after the 1953 East Coast Floods to coordinate the Amateur Radio community's response to civil emergencies and they continue to provide support to emergencies today.

A great effort from Iain and the RAYNET team, as you can see from the pictures, Iain even sacrificed his van as a mast mount to support the communications.

Whilst the incredible efforts of the emergency services are widely covered by the press there are a huge number of support activities that provide critical services to allow them to do their jobs. Well done to RAYNET and of course Iain, who is still finding dust in unwanted places.

Improved High Sensitivity

As part of our continuous improvement ethos we are pleased to announce the launch of two improved design high sensitivity IEPE accelerometers.
The HV1KT-T and HV2KT-T offer 1000mV/g and 2000mV/g sensitivity respectively providing the ability to measure extremely low amplitude vibrations typically seen in Civil, Rail, Environmental and Marine applications.
Both accelerometers are considerably smaller and lighter than their predecessors meaning they can be used in a wider range of applications with reduced mass loading effects. Also now with isolated cases for protection against electrical interference.

During a recent Kemo Ltd sales review we analysed which of our accelerometers had proven itself as the most popular model for our global customer base over the last 12 months. I guess the result is not such a great surprise, but perhaps worth a closer look as there are some key elements of the No.1 accelerometer that mean it is truly an all rounder option.

The GV100T-T is a 'general purpose' IEPE accelerometer, perhaps a description that belittles its incredible application flexibility. It is definitely a great all round solution, let's pick out the key reasons:

✅ Mass, only 6.5grams, that's less than half the mass of other general purpose accelerometers. Meaning it is excellent for minimising mass loading issues in a huge range of applications

✅ Just 11mm across the hex base, making it much smaller

✅ The GV100T-T has a sensitivity of 100mV/g making it highly sensitive and a range of ±50g

✅ Titanium rugged tapped base body for ease of mounting

✅ 10/32UNF top connector for ease of cable access and fitting

✅ Available with a wide range of mounting accessories and high performance cable solutions, designed to maximise signal integrity

Widely used in applications such as vibration shaker control, modal analysis, structural vibration monitoring and general vibration measurement. Due to its construction the GV100T-T is also suitable for space applications, as it meets the required low outgassing requirements. It truly is an all round option.

When measuring vibration on lightweight structures such as PCB boards, mass loading can be an issue. So ultra miniature accelerometers are used, however small size and low mass usually means, low sensitivity, making the measurement low amplitude vibration a challenge.
