Teignmouth Harbour Commission

Teignmouth Harbour Commission The role of the Harbour Commission is primarily as the navigation authority regulating marine operations from Teignmouth Harbour to Newton Abbot.

I am sure you have noticed but we have finished on the point as of today Friday the 29th May. A huge thanks to you all for your patience, I think it fair to state that 99% were supportive. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Despite returning the channel for shipping back to something sensible, as marked on the chart, this unfortunately is not the end. We are working with our partners and those responsible and accountable to ensure that this huge migration of sand doesnt happen again, and in order to do that we need collaboration from all parties. The weather may be lovely now but the Commissioners are driving to realise a plan of repair for the breakwater and where possible improvements; its not just about sand its about thinking ahead to protect our area and those living here. I will as ever keep you informed as I progress or if I dont, hopefully the former.

Anyway the weather looks good for this weekend and we will be on the water as per usual. Most of our users are following the directions, in relation to the speed limit of 6 Knots, but some are not. Thank you for all the pictures and videos of offenders, and particular thanks as ever to Devon and Cornwall Police Team for their assistance. Have a good weekend, stay safe and look out for each other.

Thanks again for your patience as we continue to work on re profiling at Den Point. For your information we will be stopping work by close of play today ,(Friday 22nd May) and will re start on Tuesday the 26th May. Having liaised with our partners at Teignbridge District Council, the point will be open this weekend for the Bank Holiday.

Next week - We will start back on the point on Tuesday, finishing on Friday the 29th. Again I thank you for your understanding.

Weather is looking good so remember the rules, they are there to keep you safe. I will take a very dim view if the 6 knot speed limit is not followed, but I am hopeful the message has got through and we can all enjoy our river safely with this weather.

See you on the water.

As we approach the weekend I wanted to thank you all for your support and understanding whilst the Teignmouth Harbour Commissioners conduct the reprofiling work at Den Point. Further thanks to Teignbridge District Council for their assistance in securing the site, when we are finished I am sure everyone will appreciate the end result.

As a reminder I wanted to share the following pictures and further rationale as to why we are doing this.

Due to the Easterly winds we have endured since last year the Point has migrated into the main channel, which as a Statutory Harbour Authority, we MUST keep clear for shipping. Due to a lack of Groynes along Teignmouth Beach there has been an excessive amount of sand that has created the issue we see today and the Commissioners have no choice but to act. Unfortunately the Groynes are outside the Harbour Authorities limit but we will continue to work with our partners to find a solution.

How far have we got to go?

We are assessing the progress daily with our contractor and are mindful of the approaching holidays, but now we are here we must achieve a level of re profiling that ensures navigational safety. After completing one full week we will assess Monday / Tuesday and I will let you know as to progress and the plan.

On another note, to all my boating customers on the river, please ensure, where required, that prop guards are used. This is to protect both swimmers and adjacent boats and is in fact harbour legislation to do so. Its all of our responsibility for safety.

Weather is not looking too great this weekend but if you are on the water remember 6 knots. Thanks again to Devon & Cornwall Police for their support, and for your info we will be on the river as per usual.

Have a great weekend

Rob

Great weekend - A huge thanks to the Teignmouth Community Policing Team, supported by the Devon and Cornwall Police Maritime Unit and the Devon and Cornwall Police Drone Team. This Operation has set a template for the forthcoming summer where we, Teignmouth Harbour Commissioners, can work with our partners to keep our area safe for all users.

What's on this week?

Beach Re Profiling will commence tomorrow Monday the 11th of May. This has been delayed due to the movent and delivery of equipment so apologies for any lack of news as things did change daily. Thanks to Teignbridge District Council for their asistance on this, Hopefully we can return the point to what it should look like.

Shipping this week - With the tides we are looking at the first movement on Wednesday the 13th, GT Vela followed by the Wilson Borg on Friday. This may change, as always in this line of work.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend

Good morning all - What's on this week?

Unfortunately the beach reprofiling, set to commence later today, will be delayed. I will keep you informed as things progress but its looking like we will start later this week.

Variable jobs this week for the crew, moorings maintenance, soundings, flat bedding, audit prep, moorning allocations and prepping for the season further with marker buoys for our partners at TDC. Will let you know when these are to go out.

Have a great week , looks like any sun tan plans will be on hold looking at the weather, but if it does rain, as ever, its good for the garden.

What's on in May at Teignmouth Harbour

1. Beach Reprofiling - I am sure you are all aware that we have suffered some challenges in relation to Den Point and the huge migration of sand encroaching the main channel. Regardless of future plans, we are in a position where we need to act now. I am both grateful and pleased to announce that we will commence reprofiling on Tuesday the 5th of May. This work is planned to take no longer than three weeks, and may well take less. This date has been chosen to avoid the May Bank Holiday, so as to not hinder your enjoyment, but also in the hope that the the weather would assist - of course it wont! I would like to thank all of you and your support and patience in this endeavour; hopefully the point will be returmed to what it should be , (as detailed in BA Chart 26 inset C), and you can all return to you moorings. I would also like to thank the MMO for their swift assistance, Crown Estates, Teignbridge District Council, RNLI and Teignmouth Marine Services for making this as painless as possible. For info - this operation will have no impact for those on the water and I would ask that anglers and walkers stay away so we can complete the task as swiftly as possible, the area will be fenced off. I will be updating you as things happen via the Teignmouth Harbour Master FB profile.

2. Enforcement weekends to start - Due to the reported incidents last season and unfortunately the less respectful water users already this year, we have worked hard with our partners at Devon & Cornwall Police and will be receiving visits on both land and sea in support of our operation. Remember the speed limit is there for a reason, so follow it. Plenty of sea room pass Ness Point for speed and fun, so get out into some space.

3. Dredging to Commence on the 25th of May for 5 days. Post reprofiling we will see an increase in sediment in the main channel and approaches so the dredger will work towards getting us back to our required depth. Notice to Mariners will cover the specifics nearer the time.

4. Licenced Events for May -Teign Rowing Club Coastal Regatta is set to take place on the 9th of May commencing at 0800 with tea and medals, (the presentation at 1600). Thanks to Rachel for liaising with us .

Keep an eye out for any Notice to Mariners - Thats enough from me .

Good afternoon all, as we approach the Easter weekend it is where we start to think about the approaching improved weather, (I hope) and potentially more time on the water. Last year we had some challenges where we were faced with water users being less than considerate when using our beautiful river. I am pleased to see recently that the MCA, via new Watercraft Legislation, has finally prosecuted a speed boat driver who thought it ok to ignore local speed limits furthermore not maintaining a proper lookout, which resulted, unfortunately in the speed boat hitting another craft. The Judge described it as a 'life threatening incident'. The man in charge of the speed boat was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court and sentenced to 12 months in jail, suspended for two years, 200 hours unpaid work, charged with £3,000 court costs and damages of £1,676.

It is important to understand that our speed limits and regulations are there to protect all of us. Whilst this sounds like a standard statement I can assure you it is not. The example I have shared and all incidents like this are avoidable, so please remember to consider your actions, those around you and more importanly comply with local regulations as they are there for a reason!

This year we have worked closley with our enforcement partners to ensure that any person breaching the Watercraft Order, Teignmouth General Directions, ASB or under the influence when in charge of any vessel or PWC will be investigated and followed through.

As ever it is the minority that challenge us and it is the majority that care for our river and those using it . I am hopeful that we have a fantastic season, everyone is safe and people are considerate to all.

See you on the water.
