Looking Back | Westering

Some projects prove that great construction isn’t just about creating beautiful buildings—it’s about building a better future.

We’re incredibly proud to have been part of Westering, an award-winning sustainable home nestled within Dartmoor National Park. Designed to generate more energy than it uses, the property demonstrates that environmentally responsible homes can also be architecturally stunning and built to the very highest standards.

Working on a project like Westering required meticulous attention to detail, expert craftsmanship and a shared commitment to sustainability. From carefully selected natural materials to the seamless integration of energy-efficient technologies, every aspect of the build was completed with respect for both the environment and its spectacular setting.

The project went on to receive a RIBA Regional Award, recognising the quality of the design and construction.

Whether we’re building an innovative eco-home, restoring a listed property or creating an extension for a growing family, we bring the same pride, care and commitment to every project we undertake.

If you’re planning your next building project, we’d love to hear from you.

Looking Back | Staddon House

We’re incredibly proud of every project we complete, but it’s always a special privilege to work on a listed building.

Our work at Staddon House involved carefully preserving the character and history of this beautiful property while seamlessly incorporating modern elements to ensure it remains practical, comfortable and ready for many years to come. It’s a balance that takes experience, craftsmanship and real respect for the building itself.

The finished project was recognised with a Devon Historic Buildings Trust Conservation Award, something we’re immensely proud of and a testament to the care and attention that went into every stage of the work.

Whether we’re entrusted with a nationally recognised heritage building or helping a family transform their home, we bring the same commitment to quality, detail and craftsmanship to every project.

If you’re planning a renovation, extension or restoration, we’d love to hear about it.

Looking Back | Exeter Cathedral

Some projects are simply unforgettable.

We were incredibly proud to play a part in the conservation works at Exeter Cathedral in 2025, helping to preserve one of the country’s most beautiful and historically important buildings for future generations.

Whether we’re restoring a medieval cathedral, renovating a period property or building an extension for a family home, the same principles guide every project we undertake: quality workmanship, attention to detail and pride in a job well done.
Being trusted to work on a landmark like Exeter Cathedral is something we’ll always be proud of, and it’s a standard we bring to every project, large or small.

If you’re thinking about improving your home, we’d love to help bring your ideas to life.

Looking Back | Postbridge Cottage

Some projects perfectly capture what modern building is all about—protecting the past while building for the future.

We’re incredibly proud to have transformed Postbridge Cottage, a derelict granite property on Dartmoor, into a beautiful Passivhaus EnerPHit-certified home. By carefully preserving its historic character while introducing cutting-edge sustainable building techniques, we created a home that’s exceptionally comfortable, remarkably energy efficient and built to stand the test of time.

Passivhaus is one of the world’s most demanding building standards. Through outstanding insulation, exceptional airtightness and intelligent ventilation, these homes use a fraction of the energy of a typical property, providing lower running costs, year-round comfort and a significantly reduced environmental impact.
Projects like this demonstrate the breadth of experience at RM Builders & Contractors. Whether we’re restoring a listed building, creating a contemporary eco-home or extending a family property, we’re committed to delivering exceptional craftsmanship and lasting quality.

The project received a Devon Building Control Building Excellence Certificate, recognising the outstanding standard of construction and attention to detail throughout.

If you’re planning a renovation, extension, self-build or sustainable home, we’d love to help bring your vision to life.

There’s nothing quite like creating something truly special in one of Devon’s most beautiful locations.

We’re delighted to be working on the construction of this bespoke residential swimming pool and outdoor hot tub in the stunning surroundings of Salcombe. Every project is unique, and it’s been a pleasure working closely with both our client and Simon Le Page Architects to bring their vision to life.

While the finished pool will provide the perfect place to relax and unwind, there’s a huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes. From the construction itself to the specialist plant room that keeps everything running smoothly, every detail has been carefully planned to ensure the highest standards of quality, reliability and performance.

Sustainability has also played an important role in the project. The pool is heated using a ground source heat pump, with electricity supplied by roof-mounted solar panels, while a newly installed borehole provides a sustainable water source. It’s a great example of how modern technology can help create luxurious outdoor spaces that are also kinder to the environment.

As Principal Contractor, we’re proud to coordinate every stage of the build, working alongside talented designers, skilled tradespeople and trusted partners to deliver a finished project that our client can enjoy for many years to come.

We can’t wait to share more updates as this fantastic project progresses.

Looking Back | Butchers Hall, Tavistock

Some buildings are woven into the history of a town, and it’s a real privilege to help preserve them for future generations.

We were proud to restore Butchers Hall, the iconic Grade II listed building beside Tavistock’s historic Pannier Market. The project involved conserving original features, carrying out specialist repairs and carefully introducing modern services to ensure the building could continue to serve the community while retaining all of its historic character.

Working on heritage buildings is about much more than repairing what’s there. It’s about respecting the craftsmanship of the past while ensuring these remarkable places remain practical, safe and relevant for the future. That’s something we’re passionate about at RM Builders & Contractors.

The quality of the restoration was recognised with a Devon Historic Buildings Trust Conservation Award—an achievement we’re incredibly proud of and one that reflects the dedication and expertise of everyone involved.

Whether we’re restoring an important listed building or helping transform a family home, we bring the same care, craftsmanship and attention to detail to every project.
If you’re planning your next building project, we’d love to hear from you.

There’s something incredibly rewarding about breathing new life into a historic building.

We’ve recently completed restoration works at St Martin’s Church Hall in Liskeard, transforming the building with a completely new slate roof, including new felt, battens and insulation, along with replacement cast iron downpipes, internal redecoration and the installation of solar panels.

Working on heritage buildings is never simply a case of replacing old with new. Every project demands careful planning, respect for the original craftsmanship and an understanding of how traditional materials and modern building techniques can work together. It’s about protecting the character of a building while ensuring it remains fit for future generations.

Churches and historic community buildings have stood at the heart of towns and villages for generations. We take great pride in helping preserve these important landmarks, carrying out every stage of the work with the care and attention they deserve.
The result is a building that’s weatherproof, more energy efficient and ready to continue serving its community for many years to come.

If you have a restoration, refurbishment or heritage project you’d like to discuss, we’d love to hear from you.

We were incredibly proud to celebrate the official opening of the new extension at Pilcher’s Field Care Home in Crapstone, a project that recently earned RM Builders & Contractors a Highly Commended Award for Small Development from the Devon Building Control Partnership. This recognition means a great deal because the awards are nominated by Building Control Officers themselves, celebrating projects that demonstrate outstanding craftsmanship, quality and attention to detail.

It was a privilege to work alongside the Pilcher’s Field team to deliver an extension that complements the original building while providing additional accommodation and welcoming communal spaces. The development makes the most of the beautiful countryside views and creates areas where residents can socialise, build friendships and continue to enjoy independent living.

Pictured are RM Builders & Contractors’ Alan Stewart and Sarah Wilson alongside West Devon Borough Council Leader Mandy Ewings, Rebecca Smith MP and Ken Farnham, Chair of Trustees for Abbeyfield Buckland Monachorum Society.

Whether we’re delivering community projects like this or helping families extend, renovate or restore their homes, we’re committed to the same high standards of quality, craftsmanship and professionalism.

Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this fantastic project to life.
