The BBC have released a news article today asking the question: “Should London become a ‘Sponge City’?” https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c51ngn55gz4o

In summary it seems to be asking, should London use Sustainable Drainage Systems (a.k.a. SuDS)? This isn’t a new idea, and it isn’t one that is unique to London. Developments of all shapes and sizes across the country are already required to utilise SuDS and reduce rainfall runoff from the site and have needed to do so for many years.

The article states that the issue with SuDS is with their implementation not concept. It recognises that significant investment is required for them to work alongside a change in collaborative mindset.

Is this simply a case of London being behind the times when it comes to SuDS and requesting a bail out? Or, is it actually advocating for the Government subsidizing SuDS on new developments?

Could a developer be encouraged to retrofit SuDS collaboratively across an entire neighborhood in return for a greater allowable discharge rate? Would the neighbouring land/property owners even want to go down this route?
