WHY IS PEAT BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?
Peat forms when plant material is deposited in an oxygen-poor environment, generally one that is saturated with water such as a bog. Its destruction releases vast amounts of carbon, particularly methane, into the atmosphere

After mining, the remaining peat continues to release carbon dioxide & methane into the atmosphere. The carbon in peat, when spread on a field or garden, quickly turns into carbon dioxide, adding to greenhouse gas levels.
