You can usually tell how hard a shutter has been hit by what comes out of it. This lath came off the curtain folded almost in half, with the end lock torn clean away.

Four laths went back in along with a new bottom rail, new end locks and rivets. The curtain sits flat again and runs true through the guides.

A shutter that takes a knock rarely fails all at once. It just gets progressively harder to run until something gives.

Nothing ever breaks at eleven in the morning. It breaks at eleven at night, in the rain, with the yard still full.

First job on a call-out isn't the repair — it's working out what's failed, what's holding, and whether the door can stay in service at all. Then either the fix, or the opening made secure and the truth told straight.

Either way, somebody turns up. 24/7.

Sometimes there's nothing left to repair. The old sectional door on this job had reached the end of its working life — tired panels, one narrow vision strip, and years of patching behind it.

It came out in a single visit. In its place, a new insulated sectional door: fresh panels, four vision windows across the leaf, new tracks and a new shaft above the opening, and a new operator with control gear wired in beside it.

Autumn cuts everything back to two colours out here: wet slate and dead gold.

Leaves bank up in the guides, the bottom seal stiffens, and a shutter that ran clean all summer starts to drag on the way down.

Cleared in September, it's a service visit. Left to January, it's a call-out in the dark.

Signing off for the week.

Friday, kettle on, and the vans are rolling back in. A quick look at where this one took us:

A big week of planned servicing for one of our contract customers — a long list of sites, doors inspected, guide seals replaced, a shutter curtain realigned. In between, the call-outs: a door stuck open, another stuck halfway, one with no power to the motor at all, a fast-acting door that wouldn't close and an exit door ignoring its buttons — all attended to and handed back.

Closer to home, a roller shutter assessed for repair in Meir, a noisy door looked at in Crewe, glass entrance doors checked over in Birmingham, a survey in Audley and a back door serviced out at a research park near Cambridge. Swing doors given their service for another customer, remotes tuned in and a door automated for others.

That's the doors looked after. Now the boots come off.

Just completed in Crewe — an industrial roller door had stopped opening, fault code F1.6 on the panel. Turned out to be a faulty WSD. Replaced it, tested the door through a full cycle, and it's opening cleanly again.

This door in Oldbury kept reopening partway through closing, seemingly at random. Turned out excess wire rope was catching on the safety edge cable near the bottom limit, breaking the photocell beam each time. Trimmed back the excess rope, and the fault's gone.

No warning. The spring just let go — and the door stopped dead, half-raised. That's how torsion springs fail: not gradually, but all at once. New spring assembly fitted, door running again before the shift was out.

A pair of door springs on a job just up the road in Stoke-on-Trent had worn through their inserts and lost tension, making the door harder and harder to lift. Fitted a full replacement set, springs and spring brake bracket both, and left it lifting smoothly.
