The perfect settings for laser welding thin metal

When you sit down at your laser welder, Paul’s golden rule is simple: Start low and go higher.

Here, he’s working with wafer-thin metal, so he starts with very low power and a short weld time, testing with a single shot before increasing anything.

Once he’s reached the lowest settings he can use effectively, there’s another way to fine-tune the weld. By increasing the spot size, Paul can spread the energy over a larger area and reduce the power needed.

Once he’s found the optimum settings for the job, he can get on with welding confidently without worrying about blowing a hole through the material.

It’s all about finding the right combination of power, time and spot size.

What a Jewellery Show. 👏

We were kept very busy across the two days, chatting to jewellers, demonstrating our latest technology and, most importantly, getting plenty hands on with the machines.

From laser welders and engravers to XRF analysers, diamond detectors and live wax 3D printing, we brought a lot to Stand J30. Here’s a little look back at some of the highlights.

A huge thank you to everyone who came to see us, asked questions, tried the machines and shared what you’re working on. It was brilliant to meet so many of you.

Missed us at the show? No problem. Drop us a message and we can arrange a demo at our showroom, or come to you where appropriate.

The Jewellery Show may be over, but the demos certainly aren’t. 😉

Come see us at Stand J30 at the jewellery show!

We've already seen so many of you today who were excited to explore the jewellery technology we have on offer!

From live 3D printing wax for casting to hands on demos with laser welders, there's so much to explore on our stand.

You still have time to drop by today!

Bench time, not just screen time.

We think a supplier should know the craft, not just the catalogue.

So Beth spent time with Sappho Rocks learning the art of polishing, getting hands-on with the techniques and tools that take a piece from freshly worked to properly finished.

Every bit of bench knowledge we pick up changes how we specify, install and support the machines our trade customers rely on. This means more solutions that suit the workshop in front of us.

Beth's engraving samples box is looking better for it too.

Bigger laser welders don’t just mean more power 👀

Once you move up to a larger laser welder, you also get more control over how that power is delivered.

Different wave shapes can be useful for everything from getting into tricky areas around collets, to breaking down infill and smoothing your work.

It’s one of those features you might not realise you’re missing until you’ve got it.

And if you’re currently using a smaller machine, it’s worth knowing what’s available when you’re ready to step up.

Using an XRF analyser by hand? There’s a right way to do it.

With the SciAps X5, understanding where the X-rays are going is just as important as getting the measurement.

Matt shows the safest way to use the X5 as a handheld, from positioning yourself in a corner to placing the sample on a table and using the camera to make sure you’re measuring exactly where you intend to.

Our team will walk you through the best practices while using your new XRF analyser. Drop us a DM to book a demo or visit our website.

Stop overshooting your laser! 👀

One of the biggest mistakes Paul sees from students is repeatedly firing in the same spot when something isn't quite working.

It might feel like you're making progress, but you're actually changing the surface underneath the laser. As the material heats up, the way it reacts changes too.

Paul's advice? Take a breath and move on.

Work on a different area, let the original spot cool down, then come back to it. The material has had time to settle, giving you a more consistent result.

This is the thinking behind six shot lasering, watching how the material changes and making the right moves with each shot.

Sometimes, more laser isn't the answer.

How easy is the SISMA LOGO engraver to learn?

We gave our engineer Luke a challenge.

He spends his days repairing engraving machines, but he'd never actually used one.

So we handed him the SISMA LOGO engraver, pressed record, and let him figure it out for himself.

The software guided him through the process, from selecting the material to previewing the engraving, making it surprisingly straightforward to get up and running.

By the end, his verdict was simple:

"Really easy to use... and it comes out with really nice quality engravings."

Would you trust yourself to have a go on your first attempt?

Never XRF test jewellery while you're holding it.

It might sound obvious, but it's a mistake people can be tempted to make.

The good news is that the SciAps X5 is designed so you don't have to.

Its built-in targeting camera lets you line up exactly where you want to analyse, while the guide marks on the nose of the analyser help you position it accurately on the piece.

That means you can test precisely, without ever needing to hold the jewellery in your hand during analysis.

Better accuracy. Better practice. Better peace of mind.

Have you ever seen someone using an XRF analyser the wrong way?

Are you breaking your filler wire too soon?

In this training we held at the Goldsmiths' Centre, Paul Paine explains why patience matters when you're infilling with a laser.

Rather than attaching the filler wire straight away, Paul focuses on building material first. He rotates the workpiece to weld from multiple angles, leaving the final attachment until the end. When he breaks the wire away, he deliberately leaves a small lump of material behind.

Paul also adjusts his settings as he works. By increasing the spot size and reducing the power, he can spread the heat over a larger area and create a smoother melt without concentrating all the energy in one place.

It's another example of how small changes in technique can make laser welding more controlled and more consistent.

What's one laser welding technique that took you the longest to master?
