"Can clamps be encapsulated by Composite Wraps?"

We hear this question often at Icarus Composites.

Recently, a client faced a challenging situation: They identified a defect on their pipeline. A clamp had been installed over it as a temporary measure. They wished to install a Composite Wrap as a permanent, 20 year solution. However, there was concern that if the clamp was removed the defect would go through-wall during operation.

So, what did we do?

- We removed any protrusions from the clamp (brackets, handles, bolt tails)
- Ensured good adhesion to the clamp substrate through appropriate surface prep.
- Profiled the clamp using our specialist metal epoxies to prevent stress concentrations and create a seamless 30° transition for the composite layup.

The result?
- A fully encapsulated clamp.
- A pipeline extended by 20 more years.
- And a very happy client.

Pipe lagging and heat trace cables combined with a harsh marine environment created the perfect conditions for CUI (corrosion under insulation) on this 12" carbon steel fuel line.

Our BioWrap 102 composite wrap repair system was able to provide the perfect solution - preventing further external corrosion, restoring the pressure retaining abilities of the pipe and extend its design life by 20 years.
