Here's a look at what the workshop got through this week.

Different jobs, different engines, different stages of the work across the week. Engine strip-downs, component work, parts verified and staged, jobs tested and signed off before they leave the workshop.

Some jobs are straightforward. Some take longer than expected. That's the nature of the work, and the team gets on with it either way.

The maritime decarbonisation conversation is almost entirely about what comes next.

Alternative fuels, hybrid systems, and zero-emission vessel designs are shaping where the industry is heading, but the global fleet running today is predominantly powered by conventional engines, and given vessel lifespans of 20 to 30 years, that stays true well into the 2030s.

Those engines are operating under more compliance scrutiny than ever. Performance data is now feeding directly into commercial and regulatory outcomes across:
→ CII ratings
→ EU ETS allowance costs
→ FuelEU Maritime intensity thresholds

A well-maintained engine runs more efficiently, which means lower emissions per voyage and a better compliance position at the end of the year.

While the industry works through the bigger transition questions, the vessels operating right now need the same level of engineering attention they always have. Keeping conventional engines in good condition is part of how operators manage their compliance position today.

2026 brought three emissions compliance regimes active at the same time.

For vessels trading to EU, EEA or UK ports:
→ EU ETS: 100% emissions coverage from January 2026, allowances at €75-85 per tonne
→ FuelEU Maritime: penalties up to €2,400 per tonne for vessels exceeding the greenhouse gas intensity threshold
→ UK ETS: active from July 2026 for UK-linked trades

Engine condition feeds directly into where a vessel sits across all three. A well-maintained engine running efficiently produces fewer emissions per voyage, and fewer emissions means a lower compliance bill.

Maintenance scheduling, overhaul timing and parts quality all feed into that position. The engineering decisions made this year show up in the numbers at the end of it.

Finding a part is the straightforward bit, but getting it verified, cleared and on the vessel before the schedule slips is where the real work happens.

There's more between a catalogue listing and a fitted part than most people account for:
→ Lead times shift depending on location and demand
→ Shipping routes add days
→ Quality has to be verified before anything goes near an engine

Knowing which parts are actually within reach when the schedule is tight takes supplier relationships built over time. We work directly with OEM suppliers and through our partnership with MD Trade, a specialist German parts operation, which gives us reach that a standard catalogue search doesn't.
