When John Hadlow Martin established Martin's Rubber Company Ltd. back in 1865 his main business was in waterproofing using the early Mackintosh rubberised fabric products, and as time went on he expanded into more general engineering products such as hoses, gaskets and seals, along with Victorian then Edwardian branded medical and surgical products. We have a Ledger from the 1930's when grandfather Campbell bought the company which lists many strange products, so we were fascinated to find one of those appear on an auction site; duly acquired it is now back here at Martin's after 100 years or so... fascinating to see a bit of our heritage that has helped the company survive and prosper into what is now our 161st year in business, with all the class leading skills, solutions, techniques and approval that a 21st century manufacturing business requires...

In our 160th year, while we continue innovate and move Martin's Rubber Company Ltd. forward with new technologies and processes, we also take some moments to reflect on our heritage. Adam was recently asked to take custody of the magnificent Retirement Clock our toolroom team designed and manufactured for Joe Kijanski who worked for us from 1950 until 2014, which his extended family have now asked us to look after in his memory. It now sits in pride of place on Adams' Grandfathers' desk in our conference room, along with our family photos and Adams' fathers pipe stand, as it became his desk once Grandfather Bert Campbell retired.. as we look to the future, its important we continue to build on the foundations laid by our predecessors, as ever, thinking long term.. Here is Joe's story, truly inspiring... https://www.martins-rubber.co.uk/blog/joe-kijanski-retires-after-64-years-service/

Intumescent seals are designed for use in applications where, in the event of a fire, the seal is required to expand to fill a gap, saving lives and allowing people the time to evacuate.

In military applications, however, the timing of that expansion is critical - with the ultimate goal being to protect personnel from noxious gases and smoke, often a more serious threat than fire. Our in-house technology enables us to model accurately to predict failure points and then manufacture to meet trigger temperatures, giving people the best chance of survival.
