🎄📆 When the calendar says Christmas, but the Gantt charts say otherwise…⁉️

➡️I worked 11 Christmases in a row.
Life at sea: Young, no wife / family, driven by anything other than turkey and tinsel. Did it feel like work? Sometimes. Mostly, I had a crew that felt a bit like a family. Grateful for that chapter… but also glad things have changed a little!

➡️Thanks to all those who made it for Christmas Lunch in the UK, and all those still in 🇪🇸🇦🇪🇹🇷 on projects, having a feed.
(Looking at the bank statements you all had a good time too!)

💡➡️’Gen Z’ Apprentices - like to know what’s worked for us (and how they’ve helped me along the way)⁉️

Refit International have taken on 7 x ‘Gen Z’ apprentices over the past five years. Despite all the noise about how they ‘view work’, I’ve found it’s not that different.

☑️Here’s what’s been succesful for us:

➡️BE FAIR
💰 Wages: Gen Z knows their worth (trust me, they talk). So, we pay above-market to attract the best. Incentives = results. Distant promises of a payrise 👎
✔️Set the Stage, Clarity is key.
“Big week, we’ll supply breakfast, vans leave at 7:25, no latecomers, or you’re walking.”
✔️Consistency is fundamental: I stay calm, but firm. No drama, just clear instructions: Iron fist, velvet glove.

➡️BE KIND
📆 Change is Good: “Back in my day…” doesn’t fly anymore. And honestly, I’m ok with that. I share my experiences with them from an anecdotal perspective, and demonstrate why we have to improve on that:
✔️Inexperience isn’t incompetence. Mistakes Happen. I’ve made them in my career. We try to focus on owning and rectifying it, rather than living in it.
✔️Eat Together = Team Bonding: Seriously, 🍕fixes a lot. Shared meals make us more than just coworkers they create bonds. This lot have a sense of humour (they’ve got to looking at their mullets)

➡️BE COOL
😎 Engage & Relate: I’m not just a boss, I’m a person.
✔️Respect: They are given it from day dot, but we have fun. Rule 62 - “Don’t take Yourself too damn seriously”.
✔️Being Cool helps. If you’re generally a dick, this is going to be tricky.

📲Phones - We keep it simple: if you need it, use it. If not, get on.
🍻Drinks - This lot seems to party less on the whole, I haven’t seen a hangover yet on a work day 🤞

☑️Where It’s Paid Off:

💷 Gen Z now recommends us to their friends, bringing in top-notch talent. These humans can graft 💯
💶 Once trust is built, we mix rewards with accountability - we offer experiences, not just financial rewards, we do these as a team.
⌚️I adapt or get left behind. I don’t have a Time Machine for 90’s applicants, not sure if I’d want one either.

This is just my experience, take what you like and leave the rest 🤙
