We are looking for a reliable, friendly, and proactive Part-Time Shop Assistant to join our team in Dibden Purlieu!

• 🕘 Hours: Fridays (9am – 5pm) & Saturdays (9am – 4pm)

• 🛍️ Experience: Previous retail or shop experience is preferred, but a great attitude is essential.

• 🔞 Age Requirement: Applicants must be 18 or over (due to lone working & selling age-restricted products.

Key Responsibilities & Physical Demands:

• Serving customers with a warm and welcoming attitude.

• Setting up external stock displays in the morning and bringing them securely inside before closing.

• Physical Requirements: This is an active role that keeps you on your feet!
You will be setting up our external stock displays in the morning and bringing them securely inside before closing. The role involves routine heavy lifting, so you must be comfortable lifting and carrying stock boxes weighing up to [10–20kg] throughout the day.

As many of you will know, the last few years have been incredibly challenging for small businesses.

We've been hit from all sides by rising overheads; business rates, energy costs and employment costs have all increased significantly, while the cost of stock continues to rise. Whether through general inflation or increased fuel and transport costs, almost everything we buy costs more than it did just a few years ago.

One example that has hit us particularly hard is paint. The increases we've seen in paint prices have been substantial and have had a real impact on our business.

As independent retailers, we don't benefit from the same buying power and trade discounts that large national chains enjoy. Quite simply, we often pay more for the products on our shelves, making it much harder to compete on price alone.

Here in Dibden Purlieu, we've faced additional challenges with what feels like never-ending roadworks over the past two years. Reduced access and disruption have undoubtedly affected footfall and trade for many of the independent businesses in our village.

At times, it can feel as though we're facing one obstacle after another, with very little practical support available to help us overcome them. While we understand that not every challenge can be avoided, greater consideration for the impact on village traders would make a real difference to those working hard to serve our community every day.

Despite all of this, we are still here thanks to the incredible support of our customers and community.

We'd like to say a heartfelt THANK YOU. Not just for supporting us at Joyners, but for supporting all of the fantastic independent shops that make Dibden Purlieu such a special place.

We'd also like to ask for your continued support and a little understanding. If you notice we don't stock certain items, or that prices are sometimes higher than those at a large chain store further afield, please know it isn't because we're trying to increase our profits. In many cases, it's simply what we need to do to cover our costs and keep our doors open.

Independent businesses are the backbone of our community. They provide jobs, services, expertise and advice, and help keep our village vibrant and thriving. Many are working incredibly hard just to keep going in the face of rising costs and ongoing challenges.

Every purchase made locally really does make a difference. Thank you for continuing to shop local and support your village businesses. ❤️
