Job Title: Trainee Mechanical Maintenance Engineer / Rope Access Operative.
Location: Mainly Derbyshire Based Quarries, Operating UK Wide.
Salary: Hourly.
Job Type: Full-Time, Permanent.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to start or develop a career in mechanical maintenance while gaining specialist rope access skills working in the Quarrying industry.

You will work alongside experienced engineers & IRATA technicians supporting maintenance, inspection, and repair tasks in challenging and high-access environments across various industrial sites.

Key Responsibilities

-Assist with mechanical maintenance, inspection, and repair of equipment and structures
-Support rope access operations under supervision (IRATA training provided if not already certified)
-Carry out routine servicing, fault finding, and basic installations.
-Adhere to all health & safety regulations.
-Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and organised manner.
-Complete job reports and documentation accurately.

Essential Requirements

-Strong interest in mechanical engineering, maintenance and Rope Access.
-Willingness to work at height, confined spaces and in physically demanding environments when needed.
-Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
-Positive attitude and eagerness to learn
-Ability to work as part of a team.
-Valid driving licence.
-Willing to work quarry shutdowns, call-outs and breakdowns.

It was a great day working along side Buxton Lime maintenance fitters & Steve Foster Cranes to replace a Mogensen screen this week.

The Ascend Access Health and Safety Manager fabricated a job specific HIRA for the task and an effective Rescue Plan, for site & the team too read, understand and sign before the job commencement.

The job was supervised by our IRATA Level 3 supervisor thru out to ensure rigging and methods were kept to the highest standards.

A busy March for the Ascend Access Ltd team, working closely with our client’s Tarmac, Buxton Lime at Tunstead Quarry & Holcim. Completing planned and reactive maintenance to keep the plant’s operating.

Planned works such as bunker clearing, lifting beam inspections/maintenance and confined space rescue cover will keep the team busy for April.

All our Rope Access Technicians are fully trained in Mechanical Engineering and Welding, with a combined experience of 50 years in the quarry maintenance industry.

Another silo safely accessed and all product build up removed for a great client.

Our IRATA Level 3 Operative set up a Non-Entry Rig To Rescue System, to ensure an efficient and safe rescue if required and to create working ropes.

A winch retrieval system was set up for rescue, without requiring entry.

Gas Monitor’s were attached to operatives whilst inside the silo and readings were recorded before entry & periodically by our Confined Space trained operatives.

All our projects are managed and supervised by our IRATA Level 3 operatives start to finish, to ensure the job is completed with the highest level of safety, skill and techniques.

So far, an extremely busy 2026 for the Ascend Access Ltd & J Young Engineering Services Ltd team.

Going directly into January with a shutdown accessing a 1300T Cement Silo, removing all build up from inside and carry out inspections & maintenance.

We chose to replace all the aeration pads inside the silo and carry out maintenance on the pipework manifold below. All handed back to the client, Tarmac, in time to load the scheduled cement train.

Ascend Access Ltd are based in Derbyshire, but are available for operating UK wide. We offer a service of having qualified Engineers and Welders, using Rope Access Techniques to access high heights, lower heights and Confined Space's carrying out work.

Ascend Access were contacted by a Holcim plant as they were experiencing large spillage from the top of a filler bucket elevator due to a belt wearing thru the steel.

Within 12 hours we had visited the site, liaised with site contacts and a bespoke HIRA & Rescue Plan were written then approved by our in-house Health & Safety Manager.

Within 24 hours the AAL team had accessed the hole, measured up and sourced some Abro steel plate and fitted it to stop the spillage.

We are now in the progress of designing then fitting a walkway to access this area.
