Thanks to everyone at Sweeep Kuusakoski this week with the filming. I will try and give heads up when we are on TV.
Good fun filming with BBC News round today. This was thanks to www.MaterialFocus.co.uk who sparked the filming interest with excellent data like: 3 million toys with a plug, battery or cable go to waste every 6 months!
Lovely to meet both Shanequa Paris and Roberta the Robot.
BBC News round also popped into a local repair cafe operation before filming at Sweeep Kuusakoski Ltd. Nice to give full picture of reuse and recycling options to inspire the BBC Newsround audience to www.RecycleYourElectricals.co.uk and ensure any toy with a plug battery or cable gets recycled! Festive thanks to Material focus for continuing the communication work to help prevent fires on our waste industry.

Great work bringing all these case studies together from waste and recycling teams on the frontline, to fire officers responding to urgent incidents, to residents whose lives have been disrupted by smoke and road closures.

Big thanks to Kamila Walczak for volunteering to be one of the case studies and helping contribute in our small way to the very serious issue of fire prevention.

Waste operations are busy places and easy to say no to ‘disruptions’ like this but I do think we have a collective responsibility to say yes whenever Material Focus calls - particularly when such an emotive cross sector issue like fire prevention.

Karen’s battle with the electrical clutter that a family accumulates will be familiar to many. Find out how she and husband Jim sorted it.

Amazing coverage this morning on BBC Breakfast – full 8 minutes of prime-time breakfast communication on the subject the waste industry knows all too well – fires caused by batteries!

Material focus data confirmed there were over 1,200 preventable battery fires across the UK last year.

Hidden batteries inside electricals can spark dangerous fires when crushed in bin lorries and recycling centres. Battery fires also endanger lives and cause serious environmental and health risk.

We actually had a thermal runaway battery smoking event live for the BBC film crew - Sweeep Kuusakoski staff responded excellently during the event and now featured on BBC Breakfast!

Thanks to Material Focus team for continuing to remind us – anything with a plug battery or cable can be reused or recycled.

Sweeep Kuusakoski are pleased to take delivery of our first 100% electric telehandler from JCB.

Meet the JCB 35-22E.

It has taken a while for us to have confidence that electric telehandlers are robust enough for our working environment and crucially that they can last the full working day.

One charge is good for an 8-hour working day…..but Sweeep Kuusakoski Ltd operate 24hrs a day 7 days a week. JCB have sorted this concern by supplying an additional battery which takes a mere 2 minutes to swop over – just like a rather big power tool!

Our complete site (and these JCB-E units) is powered by 100% renewable energy (REGO certified) and virtually every roof has a solar panel in place – we recycle with the lightest footprint possible.

Thanks to Mick Loft for modelling services.

Many thanks to everyone at SWEEEP for making this national BBC coverage such a success.

Our site looked great and we had some very lovely feedback about how friendly everyone is when visitors are on site.

I know visits can often be a bit disruptive to operations but this is great publicity for our company and of course helps raise the profile of waste electronics to get it out of our rubbish and into us for recycling.

Thanks again, Justin

From Barry Walker:

Yesterdays opening event conducted by Minister Robbie Moore, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for DEFRA was a great success!

This was an important step in our continued progress and getting to this point has taken a lot of effort from a great many people so thank you all.

Whilst the opening visit may have been spearheaded by Justin, I am aware this was a massive Team effort, and the site and area around the Ring Crusher in particular, looked superb.

In addition, our visitors that included, representatives from DEFRA, KCC and Compliance schemes were very complimentary both about the site and specifically about our people, so a massive well done to anyone who interacted with them, including those who bumped into them on site.

Attached is the photo of the official opening, may the Ring Crusher now earn its keep!

Thanks again all, and please pass my thanks to everyone not on Facebook.
