Due to the increasing demand for excavation in ultra-confined urban environments, Topbond has designed and commissioned the UK's first pedestrianised vacuum excavation unit, the VacuPed.

Mounted on a modified mobility scooter chassis, the VacuPed delivers full 0.25m³ suction capability through spaces previously inaccessible to conventional plant. Pavement widths as narrow as 800mm. No road closure required. Cup holder standard.

Services available from 1st April. To discuss your requirements, please contact us on [email protected].

Topbond was instructed by our client to undertake critical bridge repair and retaining wall works in the Dartford area.

Works include:

- Installation of 8 props across the river (d**e) to support a failing retaining wall, followed by the placement of concrete behind the wall to stabilise and reinforce the structure.

- Excavation in front of the existing bridge deck to allow for the construction of a new reinforced concrete pad, which will serve as a stable foundation for the replacement bridge structure.

- Removal and replacement of two deteriorating bridge decks to ensure continued safe use and structural integrity.

Topbond is currently undertaking a new phase of works focused on enhancing sediment retention. This includes the installation of two tanks, each measuring 14 meters in length and 3 meters in diameter. These tanks are designed to effectively settle out silt, preventing it from entering the stormwater system.

This scheme poses unique challenges compared to previous projects, primarily due to its confined location within a narrow highway corridor near a busy dual carriageway, the presence of existing stormwater infrastructure, and the potential complications arising from very high groundwater levels.

This proactive approach serves to safeguard the environment, ensuring cleaner rivers and streams by mitigating the risk of pipe blockages and sediment discharge into waterways.

Great progress from our site team at Stirling Business Park.

Works consist of reinforcing a failing timber crib wall surrounding the business units, using Terram and mesh alongside approx. 1000 Platipus Anchors for added stability.

Stone-filled gabion baskets will be installed in front of the anchored wall, providing additional support and a refined finish.

Well done all

We’re proud to announce that Topbond has been shortlisted for three awards at the New Civil Engineer Awards 2025!

· Specialist Contractor of the Year
· Impact in Transport
· Impact in Water & Environment

Particular job highlights have been:

A1 Sink Holes: When a depression was detected on the A1, our team quickly responded with GPR surveys, SHDP probing, and a 36-hour repair, removing soft material and reinforcing the road with Interlock ILX40 Geogrid.

A47 Honingham: We improved sediment retention with two 14m-long tanks, preventing silt from entering stormwater systems and protecting waterways. This proactive approach serves to safeguard the environment, ensuring cleaner rivers and streams by mitigating the risk of pipe blockages and sediment discharge into waterways.

Orwell Bridge: We successfully cleared polluted sludge, sediment, debris, and consolidated silt from the chambers, with all waste safely disposed of at a licensed treatment plant. The operation was carried out using our 250-ton Topjack barge and supported by two drainage tankers.

A421 Flooding: During the peak of Storm Boris, we removed 105 million litres of floodwater on the A421, deploying a fleet of 36 articulated tankers to transfer water to alternative locations. We also set up 16 over-pumps working together to pump water 4.5 km away to a lagoon at 70 litres per second.

A massive thank you to our incredible teams who make these projects happen.

We’re excited to celebrate with all the finalists on July 3rd—fingers crossed we bring home an award!
