Sunshine, rainstorms, taxis, padel, cadaveric labs, late dinners and plenty of discussion, Madrid had everything for our latest Furlong Evolution® Hip Cadaveric Lab.

It was a privilege to bring together faculty including Mr Jonathan Hutt, Mr Kartik Logishetty, Mr Majid Chowdhry, Mr Ioannis Palaiologos & Tom Robinson sharing their experience across both Direct Anterior and Posterior approaches through presentations, discussion and hands-on cadaveric training.

The meeting created a brilliant environment for open learning, practical surgical discussion and the sharing of techniques, philosophies and experiences between faculty and delegates alike. It was also great to see Naviswiss navigation utilised in selected cases throughout the lab.

A huge thank you to all faculty, delegates and the JRI team whose hard work and support helped make the meeting such a success.

At JRI Orthopaedics we remain committed to surgeon-led education and meaningful training opportunities that continue to support the evolving hip pathway.

Last week at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, we were delighted to support a successful surgeon-to-surgeon visit, welcoming Mr Andrew Stevenson and Mr Sam Heaton from Taunton & Somerset N H S Trust.

The visit began with observation of Mr Ioannis Palaiologos performing a Furlong Evolution® procedure via the posterior approach, followed by an open and informal post-case discussion over coffee, where key decisions and surgical techniques were shared candidly.

The second case featured Mr Jonathan Hutt performing a Furlong Evolution® procedure using the Naviswiss hip navigation system to supporting accurate cup positioning through an anterior approach. Ahead of surgery, Mr Hutt led a detailed pre-operative review, discussing planning and templating with the visiting surgeons before demonstrating the technique in theatre.

Experiences like this highlight the true value of surgeon-led education. Surgeon-to-surgeon collaboration encourages open dialogue, accelerates learning, and builds confidence in both technique and technology, all in support of best practice and improved patient outcomes.

JRI are proud to support education through partnership and shared experience.

Last week, Mr Raj Sahemey performed his first custom acetabular procedure at University Hospitals Birmingham, NHS Trust

The procedure was carried out with the expert guidance and supervision of the theatre team. Well done to everyone involved in ensuring a smooth procedure.

For appropriately selected patients, custom acetabular implants provide a tailored solution for complex hip reconstruction, particularly in the presence of significant bone loss or previous failed hip surgery. Designed using advanced imaging and 3D planning, these implants are matched to the patient’s anatomy to improve fit, restore hip biomechanics, and enhance stability where standard implants may not be suitable.

We wish Mr Sahemey’s patient a smooth and speedy recovery.

2026 is about people.

At JRI Orthopaedics, everything we do is shaped by the people behind our products, our employees, distributors, suppliers, surgeons, and the patients whose lives we aim to improve.

Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing , a regular feature celebrating the individuals who bring our values to life. From craftsmanship in Sheffield to collaboration in operating theatres around the world, these stories reflect our commitment to quality, integrity, and long-term clinical excellence.

Because Made in Sheffield isn’t just where we manufacture, it’s how we work, how we partner, and how we care.

First in our series is an introduction to Eric Hathway

'Taking on the Global Platform Lead role is a fantastic privilege and challenge. I'm very excited to help drive the commercial success and market growth of our incredible 3D printing technology that spans hip, knee and shoulder arthroplasty, within our UK & international markets. We're in a unique position to manufacture our offering in the UK and I'm looking forward to further enhancing our service to our global partners.

Outside of this, I love scuba-diving and competing in functional fitness events, such as Hyrox or Spartan races. Who knows, maybe an international event could be on the cards?!'

Merry Christmas from all of us at JRI Orthopaedics!

As we come to the end of another busy and rewarding year, we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has been part of the JRI journey in 2025 — our colleagues, surgeon partners, distributors, suppliers, and friends around the world.

This year has been filled with milestones we’re incredibly proud of: celebrating 40 years of the Furlong® H-A.C., expanding our international partnerships, training and supporting surgeons globally, and being recognised as International Trade Champion here in Sheffield. None of this happens without the commitment, expertise, and passion of the people we work with every day.

We’re proud of what we’ve achieved together and even more excited about what’s ahead.

Wishing you all a relaxing Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year

See you in 2026!

Looking for a hemi system that just works?

The Furlong® Hemiarthroplasty System keeps things simple — five stem sizes and your choice of head: Physiological, Bipolar, or Modular Bipolar.

No confusing offsets. No hidden costs. Just dependable performance and hands-on training to get your team confident with the system.

We’ve been providing hemiarthroplasty solutions since 1988 — and there’s a reason it still works.

From Walkmans to smartphones, from X-ray acetates to AI surgical templating - so much has changed since this early Furlong® H-A.C. ad. One thing hasn’t: dependable biological fixation

That’s why, in 2025, it’s still relevant. On the NJR, Furlong® H-A.C. shows a lower femoral revision rate than all other stems - and the difference is statistically significant at both 10 and 20 years.

10 years (femoral revision): Furlong H-A.C. 1.45% (95% CI 1.34–1.56) vs all other stems 2.04% (2.01–2.07)

20 years (femoral revision): Furlong H-A.C. 2.67% (2.38–3.01) vs all other stems 5.28% (5.15–5.41)

Tech moves fast. Patients deserve what lasts.

If you’ve been part of the Furlong journey - as a surgeon, distributor, or patient - we’d love to hear from you.
