Its ❗️❗️
◾️ First celebrated 1975 to celebrate the county’s history and heritage by the Yorkshire Ridings Society, Yorkshire Day started as a protest against local government boundary reforms that came into force 1974.
◾️ Yorkshire, originally divided into three traditional ‘Ridings’, governmental boundary change’s meant parts of the historic country were transferred to Lancashire (West Riding) and Humberside (East Riding) and the term Ridings removed completely.
◾️ East Riding so detested becoming Humberside, they re-invented Yorkshire Day in honour of the country they still felt such a part of. The County of Humberside went on to be abolished in 1996.
◾️ The days roots also derive from the anniversary of The Battle of Minden, Germany (August 1st) and the wearing of roses in the headdress that day (in the case of the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, a white rose) as tribute to fallen comrades.
◾️Celebrations with friends, family or civic events to mark the day take place all over the county.
