Tufcot is a composite engineering material manufactured from synthetic fibres and thermosetting resins. Tufcot offers the design engineer an attractive alternative to traditional materials used throughout industry for bushes, bearings, wear pads and many more applications. The company was founded in 1981, with the 3 directors; Len, Elvin and Michael, who at that time had a combined experience in the plastics and composite bearings field of over 40 Years. The company has developed, but still retains its family firm characteristics and management style; and today employs over 40 people together with one of the founding directors, who is fully dedicated to the customer. The company has seen growth by building a distribution of agents; and now supplies its components and bearings worldwide. A recent Lloyd’s audit has seen Tufcot successfully re-classified for our marine work. David G, our QHSE Manager, led the process and worked through the audit requirements to demonstrate that our systems, documentation and manufacturing controls continue to meet the required standard.

For customers, that classification matters because it provides independent confirmation that Tufcot remains capable of supplying approved material for marine bearing applications where classification requirements apply.

It also gives engineers and procurement teams confidence that the material, manufacturing process and supporting quality systems have all been reviewed as part of the approval process.

A big thank you to David for the work involved in getting the re-classification completed. This was our final audit for the year, meaning all our approvals are up-to-date.

We’ve recently invested in a new dedicated storage unit for accelerator materials, which is now on its way to our Sheffield site from Europe. The new unit will give us a safer, more controlled way to store these materials and forms part of the wider improvements we’re making across the site.

It follows other recent investment in storage, welfare and working conditions, with the focus on keeping our facilities fit for the way Tufcot operates today.

One of the areas Greg is focusing on in his new role as Business Support Manager is improving the day-to-day working environment for the Tufcot team. Over the last couple of months, we’ve installed four new air conditioning units across the canteen, CEO, CFO and main office areas, along with a new water cooler for our manufacturing team.

Work is also underway to review heating and ventilation within our engineering department, with Greg currently speaking to several companies about the options available.

These aren’t the biggest investments we make as a manufacturer, but they can make a noticeable difference to the people working here every day.

It’s part of an ongoing effort to keep improving our Sheffield site and the facilities available to our team.

Carl has had a busy few weeks representing Tufcot across Europe and meeting with customers and colleagues. After attending SMM Hamburg, he travelled to Poland for a Division Meeting with the other CEOs in the Power & Motion Division of Dacke Industri, getting to know each other at a local winery and sharing ideas. The following week was board meeting number three back in the UK, planning the future growth of Tufcot.

October will be just as busy, hosting our valued French partner Repack-S at the factory, plus a new potential customer in the hydraulics market.

These visits and meetings give us a chance to spend time with customers on their site or in our production facilities, discussing upcoming requirements face to face.

That kind of direct contact is valuable, especially when applications are technical and the best conversations often happen face to face.

A recent job through the workshop involved these large Tufcot® bearings for a naval application. The bearings range in size from 488 x 560 x 300 mm up to 580 x 660 x 295 mm, with each finished bearing cut into three segments before supply.

Segmented bearings can make installation more practical where access is limited or where fitting a full bearing is not possible, but the machining still needs to maintain the required dimensions across each section.

Another good example of the larger bearing work moving through our Sheffield facility.

We had a couple of productive days at SMM Hamburg 2026. It was good to catch up with familiar faces, meet new contacts and speak with people working across shipbuilding, marine engineering and offshore applications.

We had some useful discussions around bearing reliability, material selection, maintenance and where composite materials can offer a practical alternative to more traditional bearing materials.

Tufcot® T100 Marine continues to support applications including rudder bearings, water-lubricated propeller shaft bearings, deck equipment and offshore bearing systems.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to speak with us in Hamburg. We’re looking forward to continuing those conversations over the coming weeks.

Today, Tufcot turns 45. The business started in Sheffield in 1981 with one manufacturing machine, one lathe and a team of three. From those early beginnings, Tufcot grew through steady reinvestment in people, equipment and manufacturing capacity.

The company moved into its first workshop in 1985, expanded into a larger factory in 1996 and introduced CNC machining as part of that growth.

In 2012, Tufcot moved to its current Coleford Road site, transferring more than 50 machines while continuing to support customers throughout the move.

Today, Tufcot supplies composite materials and finished components to customers around the world across marine, rail, industrial and energy applications.

Since the end of 2025, the business has also entered a new chapter as part of Dacke Industri, opening up further opportunities for investment, technical development and international growth.

45 years on, we are still manufacturing in Sheffield and still building on the same foundations of engineering knowledge, reliable supply and long-term customer relationships.

Safe resin storage depends on more than keeping containers under cover. Containment, access, ventilation and the way materials move through the site all need to be considered. The Firevault planned for our Sheffield facility includes a 6,450-litre welded steel sump with a corrosion-resistant coating. This provides containment in the event of a spill or IBC failure, helping protect the surrounding ground and reduce the risk of a larger environmental incident.

A push-back racking system will also provide a more organised way to store and access materials, while secure doors help prevent unauthorised entry or tampering.

The unit supports our responsibilities under DSEAR, COSHH and guidance covering the storage of flammable liquids. It should also strengthen our position during customer and quality audits by providing a clear, certified storage process.

For us, this project is about improving how resin is stored, handled and controlled across the site, rather than waiting for an incident to reveal where changes were needed.

Large-diameter machining is as much about the setup as the cutting itself. At 1,300mm in diameter and 750mm long, these king post bearings required careful handling and positioning at every stage. The machinists had to support each section correctly, work across a large curved surface and keep the machined features consistent from one operation to the next.

The manual milling work shown here called for particularly close control. Access inside the bearing was limited, while the size and shape of the component left little room for adjustment once machining began.

Massive congrats to Chris and Tom, who completed the turning on our Broadbent lathe, and Chris and Brad, who carried out the milling operations.

It's a great example of the practical skill involved in machining large composite bearings, particularly when the component cannot be approached like a standard production job.
