Before you sign off a metalwork installation on site, here are 5 things worth checking

1. Have the fixings been torqued? Confirm all fixings have been torqued to the correct specification. A balustrade that looks secure isn't always one that is.
2. Has the finish been checked? Inspect for any damage, inconsistency or missed areas before the client sees it. Much easier to address before handover than after.
3. Has it been load tested? Confirm the installation has been load rated to the required standard. Non-negotiable for anything carrying people.
4. Have the gaps been measured? Infill gaps should be checked against building regulations. BS 6180 sets the maximum opening sizes. If it's out, it fails.
5. Has the sign-off form been completed? Get it in writing. A completed sign-off form protects everyone on the project.

Miss one of these and the handover gets complicated. Get them all right and the job is done properly.

Same building. Two finishes. Here's why.

Floor 5 of the stairwell at North Manchester Hospital's multi-storey car park is a bespoke mild steel balustrade, powder coated across three stair cores for a clean, consistent finish.

If you walk into the car park itself, the spec changes. The barriers on levels 2-4 and the disability ramp balustrades are galvanised, because that environment is more demanding with vehicle movement, moisture and exposure. This means that powder coat just wouldn't cut it long term.

Steel or stainless steel? It's one of the first questions to answer when specifying metalwork and the right answer depends entirely on your project.

🔩 Mild steel is cost-effective and ideal for indoor or painted/coated installations
🔩 Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant and better suited to outdoor or high-traffic environments
🔩 Galvanised steel is a cost-effective middle ground for outdoor use where aesthetics are less critical

Sometimes the best frame is no frame at all

These glass doors were installed for Home Services office using D-clamp fittings. A frameless fixing system that secures glass without any drilling, keeping the panel structurally sound without cluttering the look.

This was the right call here because the client wanted the space to feel open and professional without sacrificing security.

Heavier than it looks. Stronger than it needs to be.

Most people only think about a staircase when something goes wrong with it. The goal is to make sure that never happens and that starts from the first conversation about it.

We design, fabricate and install bespoke staircases for commercial and residential projects across the UK. Mild steel, stainless, glass balustrade, open tread, closed riser, spiral, straight, whatever the space needs.

Every staircase we build starts with a detailed design and render so the client knows exactly what they're getting before any fabrication begins. From there it's all done in-house at our Sheffield workshop.

And because everything is made to measure, there's no adapting on site to make something fit that was never quite right to begin with.

Why we always say no to these 3 requests…

Most of the time it's not about whether we can do something, it's about whether we should.

Copying non-compliant balustrades, skipping site surveys and under-speccing steel for external use are three of the most common shortcuts we get asked to take. We say no every time because the problems always show up eventually and we're not in the business of fixing avoidable problems.
