The hidden cost of downtime in high-rise residential buildings

When the power goes out, most people think: “Just get it back on.”

But in high-rise residential buildings, the real cost of downtime goes far beyond inconvenience - it directly impacts safety, comfort, and trust.

Here’s what’s really at stake:

- Lift failures
No power means no lifts. Residents can become trapped, and access for elderly or vulnerable occupants becomes a serious issue.

- Life safety systems at risk
Emergency lighting, fire alarms, smoke extraction, and access control systems all rely on power. Any interruption increases risk and liability.

- Water supply disruption
Many high-rise buildings depend on booster pumps. Without power, residents may lose access to running water entirely.

- Security vulnerabilities
CCTV, entry systems, and electronic locks can fail - leaving buildings exposed.
Resident dissatisfaction & reputation damage

Frequent outages quickly erode confidence in building management and developers - impacting occupancy and long-term value.

Here’s the reality:
The cost of downtime in residential buildings isn’t just financial - it’s operational, reputational and life-critical.

At Constant Power Solutions, we design backup power systems specifically for high-rise environments - ensuring essential services remain operational when it matters most.

Because in residential buildings, resilience isn’t optional - it’s expected.

Choosing the wrong generator size isn’t just inefficient - it can cost your business thousands in downtime, fuel waste, and equipment damage.

Here’s how to get it right:
- Start with your total load
List all the equipment you need to power and calculate the total kW/kVA required.

- Account for startup surges
Some equipment (like motors, compressors, HVAC) need significantly more power to start than to run.

- Don’t rely on soft starters to reduce size
Soft start systems can lower inrush current - but they don’t eliminate it. Undersizing a generator on the assumption that soft starts remove startup load risk can lead to voltage dips, failed starts, and nuisance trips.

- Consider future growth
Undersizing now can limit your operations later. Always allow headroom.

- Factor in your environment
High temperatures, altitude, and site conditions can reduce generator performance.

Where most businesses go wrong:
They choose a generator based on price - not application.

At Constant Power Solutions, we don’t just supply generators. We design systems around your exact requirements - ensuring reliability when it matters most.

If you're unsure what size you need, we’ll help you get it right the first time.

This week, members of the CPS team travelled to Germany for the Deutz Partner Conference - an invaluable opportunity to deepen our product knowledge and strengthen our relationship with one of the world's leading engine manufacturers.

We had hands-on time with Deutz's latest engine developments, including their genset-specification powertrains built to Stage V emissions standards. The engineering precision on display was a reminder of exactly why we specify Deutz across a wide range of our standby and prime power solutions.

Events like this matter. As a trusted designer, manufacturer and supplier of critical power systems, we knows that specification decisions carry real consequences. When a hospital, data centre or industrial site depends on a generator to keep operations running, there is no room for compromise. Understanding our products at component level - directly from the engineers who build them - is what allows us to specify with confidence. Choosing the right power partner isn't just a procurement decision. It's a critical one.

In construction, even one minute without power is never just a pause in activity.

It can quickly escalate into delays, safety risks and significant financial impact.

From tower cranes and site hoists to lighting, security systems and temporary site offices, modern construction projects depend heavily on continuous, reliable power to keep operations moving safely and efficiently.

When power is lost, even briefly, critical equipment can shut down without warning. Lifts may stop mid-operation, tools become unusable and site safety systems can be compromised. This not only disrupts productivity but can also create hazardous conditions for workers on site.

For critical lifting operations, the risk is even greater. That’s why many projects are now adopting N+1 backup systems for cranes and hoists. This approach ensures that an additional standby power source is always available, so if the primary generator fails or requires maintenance, a secondary unit can immediately take over. It provides an extra layer of resilience, helping to prevent downtime and maintain safe, controlled operation of essential lifting equipment.

Across the industry, unexpected power interruptions have led to project delays, increased costs and knock-on effects across supply chains and project timelines.

That’s why dependable standby power is essential. It’s not just about keeping the site running - it’s about protecting people, maintaining safety standards and ensuring projects stay on track when the unexpected happens.

We’re committed to raising awareness of the real impact power loss can have across the construction sector, and how the right backup solutions, including N+1 redundancy for critical equipment, can make all the difference.

We’re proud to support construction projects with reliable standby power solutions designed to perform when it matters most. Careful planning, robust systems and resilience are key to keeping sites powered and productive every day.

What happens when a data centre is ready to go, but the grid isn’t?

Across the UK and Europe, grid constraints are becoming one of the biggest barriers to new data centre developments. It’s no longer just about design or build timelines; access to power is now dictating when (and if) projects can go live.

With increasing demand and limited capacity, grid connection delays are putting pressure on programmes and forcing developers to rethink how power is delivered.

This is where onsite generation is evolving. Generators are no longer just a backup, they’re being used as bridging power or even prime power solutions to keep projects moving while grid infrastructure catches up.

We support data centre projects with high-capacity generator solutions that can be deployed quickly, helping to reduce risk and maintain momentum where power availability is uncertain.

If grid delays are impacting your project, it’s worth having a plan in place.
