Generator noise is often overlooked during project planning, until compliance becomes an issue.

In the UK, generator installations can be subject to noise assessments, particularly where equipment is installed close to residential areas, commercial developments, or noise-sensitive environments. Standards such as BS 4142 are commonly used to assess the impact of industrial and commercial sound and may form part of planning or environmental requirements.

That’s why noise control should never be an afterthought.

At Lance Power, we work with customers to help specify generator solutions that not only deliver reliable power but also support site requirements through considerations such as:
- Acoustic canopies and attenuation options
- Site-specific generator positioning
- Ventilation and airflow design
- Operational performance without unnecessary noise impact

Whether for standby, prime power, or critical applications, early planning can make all the difference.

Speak to our team to discuss a generator solution designed around both performance and compliance.

Did you know we offer Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) on your generator?

At Lance Power, our optional FAT programme gives you the chance to see your unit proven and tested before it ever arrives on site.

Here's what it covers:
- Full load & overload testing
- Safety system & protection relay checks
- Control panel & automation verification
- Performance validation against your exact specification
- Witnessed testing, so you can see it for yourself at our factory

The result? Complete confidence in your power backup before it reaches your door.

No surprises. No downtime. No compromise.

Ask us about adding FAT to your next generator project.

3 Mistakes That Cause Generator Failures

Most generator breakdowns are preventable. Here's what our engineers see most often, and how to avoid costly downtime.

1 - Skipping regular load testing
Generators left in standby mode for months without a full-load test develop wet stacking, unburned fuel residue that clogs the engine. A simple monthly exercise run under load prevents this entirely.

2 - Neglecting coolant and fuel quality
Diesel degrades in as little as 6 months, growing microbial contamination that blocks fuel filters and injectors. Meanwhile, coolant that hasn't been tested becomes acidic, quietly corroding your engine block.

3 - Ignoring battery maintenance
The single most common reason a generator fails to start in an emergency? A dead or weakened battery. Batteries should be load-tested annually and replaced on a scheduled cycle, not just when they fail.

Generator commissioning is one of the most frequently overlooked stages in standby power projects across the UK, yet it is the only way to confirm your installation will actually perform when mains power fails.

A thorough commissioning process covers three key areas:

-Pre-commissioning inspection: verifying the installation matches the design specification, with correct electrical connections, fluid levels, and control panel settings.
- Functional testing: confirming automatic start on mains failure, correct ATS operation, and that all engine and generator protection systems work as intended.
- Load testing: applying a controlled load via a portable load bank to verify rated output, stable voltage and frequency, and safe operating temperatures.

Every commissioning visit carried out by Lance Power results in a formal commissioning report issued to the client at handover, essential for regulatory compliance, manufacturer warranty, and ongoing maintenance.

We carry out generator commissioning and site testing across the UK for clients in data centres, healthcare, manufacturing, and commercial property.

As projects ramp up and temperatures rise, now is the time to make sure your power systems are ready to perform when it matters most.

For May, we are offering £500 off load bank testing, helping you validate generator performance, confirm output and ensure reliability ahead of the busy summer period. A full load bank test gives you the confidence that your system will operate exactly as expected under real conditions, before it’s put to the test on site.

If you’ve got critical power in place, don’t leave it unchecked.

Get in touch with our team to secure your May offer and keep your system performing at its best.

Is your generator actually ready for a power outage?

A generator that hasn't been properly load tested might start, but that doesn't mean it will perform when it counts.

Wet stacking. Incomplete combustion. Underloading. These are silent killers of standby power systems, and they're entirely preventable.

Our 100 kW Portable Load Bank is designed for service engineers, commissioning teams, and facilities managers who need a serious testing solution, without the hassle.

What makes it stand out:
- Compact & lightweight supplied with a carry case, no lifting equipment needed
- Industrial-grade performance built for demanding environments and repeated use
- Intelligent controls precise, incremental load application for accurate test simulation
- Full electrical monitoring 3-phase voltage & current, power factor, frequency & more
- Scalable to 200 kW / 250 kVA synchronise two units for larger systems

The LPL100 is the ideal solution for generator commissioning and acceptance testing, routine preventative maintenance, and verification of UPS and standby power systems. It is widely used across data centres, critical infrastructure sites, and by facilities management teams and power service providers who demand reliability in the field.

If you're responsible for keeping critical power systems reliable, the LPL100 belongs in your kit - https://lance-power.com/product-post/100-kw-portable-loadbank-lpl100/

Generator failures don’t usually come down to bad equipment. More often, they’re the result of avoidable mistakes made earlier in the project.

One of the most common issues we see is incorrect sizing. A generator that looks right on paper can quickly become a problem under real load conditions, leading to poor performance, overload risks and long-term reliability issues.

Another is a lack of proper integration. Standby power systems don’t operate in isolation, and when elements like ATS panels, switchgear or load demands aren’t fully considered, it can create complications during installation and commissioning.

Then there’s testing, or the lack of it. Systems that haven’t been properly tested under load can give a false sense of security, only to fail when they’re needed most.

The reality is that most of these issues are preventable with the right input at the right stage. Getting the fundamentals right early on makes all the difference when it comes to performance, reliability and long-term confidence in your power system.

If you’ve got an upcoming project or want a second opinion on a specification, our team is always happy to help, whether it’s a quick check or full technical support.
