In the space of seven days we have surveyed a narrowboat at Highline Yachting, worked over a handsome Linssen Grand Sturdy 380 at Shepperton Marina, carried out an MCA NDT assessment of the passenger vessel Jacob Marley at Chatham Docks, and completed the inspection and NDT assessment of three Thames Water pontoons at Turks Shipyard.

And that was just the outside jobs, the same week took in the IIMS Management Board meeting and AGM, plus several sessions with insurers discussing policy and assisting with claims.

Steel, GRP, passenger craft, commercial structures — all in one diary, all in one week. This is marine surveying at its best, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

What a lovely way to finish the week — thanks to Robin and Robert for taking the time to leave such detailed feedback on their recent surveys.
A huge amount of time and effort goes into every survey, from the attendance itself through to the research and the writing of the report. Hearing that the reports gave both clients genuine confidence in their decisions is what makes all of that feel worthwhile and is very much appreciated

A piece of British shipbuilding history, in dry dock in Thorne.

Spider T. Humber Super Sloop, built 1926 by Warrens of New Holland. 22 metres of riveted steel. One of only three surviving Humber sloops on the National Historic Fleet.

In her working life she carried over eighty different cargoes across the Humber and the coastal trade. De-rigged in 1939, fitted with a diesel, pressed into wartime service carrying munitions. Worked until 1972.

Her current owner has been restoring her since 1994. Re-rigged in 2007 — her first full rig since the war. She’s since crossed the North Sea to the Netherlands, sailed to Scotland for the Bell Rock bicentenary, and joined the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant.

Today she’s getting fresh coatings, fresh anodes, and the slow, careful work of replacing welded patches with riveted inserts continues — original method, like for like.

Still afloat. Still working. Still being looked after by people who care.

Mid-Term Commercial Coding Inspection Complete – M/Y LA FENICE

We were delighted to recently complete the mid-term commercial coding inspection of the magnificent 29m classic motor yacht LA FENICE in Sant Carles de la Ràpita.

A true piece of yachting history, LA FENICE was built in 1962 by Richards Ironworks in Lowestoft and designed by the legendary Laurent Giles Naval Architects. She was originally commissioned by financier Anthony Boyden as the support vessel for Sovereign, his 12-metre challenger in the 1964 America’s Cup — built rugged enough to cross the Atlantic and reach Australia under her own steam.

Her story since has been just as remarkable: a stint with the French Navy as a training ship in the mid-1980s, an acquisition in 2001 by renowned photographer Peter Lindbergh, and a sympathetic interior refit by Christian Liaigre featuring dark wood floors, leather accents, and elegant paneling. Following a comprehensive 2021–2023 refit by her current owner, she stands today as a benchmark in classic yacht restoration — twin Gardner 8L3Bs, a 3,360nm range at 10 knots, and accommodation for 9 guests across 4 en-suite staterooms.

A genuine privilege to step aboard and inspect such a distinguished vessel. Fair winds, LA FENICE! ⚓

Survey of historic wooden narrowboat Dane at Grendon Dry Dock.

Built in 1946/47 by the Charles Stanyer yard at Burslem for the Mersey Weaver carrying fleet, Dane originally worked the Trent & Mersey waterways carrying clay slip from Liverpool to the Potteries before returning with finished ceramic goods. Today she remains one of the relatively few surviving wooden narrowboats from that era and continues to survive thanks to extensive restoration and ongoing preservation work over many years.

Working on historic timber craft like this is always a reminder of the level of maintenance and care required to preserve these vessels for future generations. Boats of this age demand continual attention, sympathetic repairs, and long-term stewardship to keep them operational and structurally sound.

A fascinating and important piece of Britain’s inland waterways heritage.
