Had a lovely morning presenting to 1066 manufacturers this morning, and just for a brief moment we brought “Alpine Components” back to life as my old colleague Mike Trim who had retired about 15years ago was also in attendance, bought back a few memories as well.

Get in touch if you’d like to join us at the next meeting.

Always love working with Fast Maintenance Services…. Done and dusted in about 20mins…. Obviously the repair of the leak took a little while longer of course.

Well done Paul, no doubt your customer will be happy with their heating system fully working again 🙂

✅ 30 Days, 30 Posts – And That’s Just the Beginning!

Over the past month, we’ve quietly set ourselves a challenge: 30 days, 30 posts. No fanfare, no announcement – we just got on with it.

In that time, we’ve shared insights and demonstrations across the full range of what we do, including:

🔹 Products – from ultrasonic and acoustic leak detection, thermal imaging, to advanced inspection technologies.
🔹 Calibration Services – ensuring your equipment stays accurate, traceable, and compliant.
🔹 Training Courses – 1 & 2 day onsite sessions, 1 day open enrolment courses, plus specialist pathways with third-party accredited exams. We’ve also highlighted industry leaders like the ITC for advanced thermography (Cat 1, 2 & 3).
🔹 Consultation – helping you select the right tools, inspection strategies, and workflows for your business.
🔹 Inspection Services – from helium and bubble leak testing, to ultrasonic and acoustic methods, through to thermography surveys for buildings, manufacturing, and beyond.

Every post has been about giving you real examples of the work we do and the value we bring.

Now, as we wrap up this challenge, we want to open the door for you:
👉 If you need equipment, training, calibration, or specialist support – we’re here to help.

Thermal Imaging Training – What Does “ISO 18436” Really Mean?

There’s often confusion when it comes to training standards in the reliability industry. You’ll see courses advertised as being “in accordance with ISO 18436” — but that’s not the same as being in conformance.

Here’s the key difference:

✅ Conformance with ISO 18436

Requires a third-party accredited exam, delivered by organisations like BINDT or Mobius.

Training hours, syllabus, competency assessment, and exams are all audited to meet the standard.

Your certificate has international recognition — and credibility that stands up to scrutiny.

⚠️ “In accordance with ISO 18436”

Means the course content may reference the standard but without an accredited exam.

It can be useful for learning, but you’re not fully certified to the standard.

🗓️ One-Day Courses for Beginners

For those just starting out, a one-day introduction is often the perfect first step:

Learn the fundamentals — IR science, emissivity, reflections, and environmental effects.

Hands-on practice with cameras and image interpretation.

Understand ISO 18436 requirements so you know the difference between dipping your toe in and working toward conformance.

Build confidence quickly without the commitment of a full certification straight away. especially if you are unsure on what thermographic camera best suits your intended purpose.

🤔 The Real Question: What Do You Need?

Not every role requires full accreditation. Some professionals simply need the knowledge and skills to use a thermal camera effectively — and for them, a one-day “in accordance with” course may be enough.

But if you want your qualification to carry real weight, stand up to audits, and align with industry best practice, then a course with a third-party accredited exam (BINDT or Mobius) is what truly makes it ISO 18436 conformant.

Baseline offers both 1 & 2-day onsite training courses tailored to your requirements, as well as 1-day open enrolment offsite sessions.

For those ready to progress to Category 1, 2 or 3 certification, we recommend the Infrared Training Centre (ITC) — a globally recognised specialist in advanced thermography training.

So, whether you’re taking your first step with Baseline or working toward higher-level qualifications with ITC, the key is choosing the right training path for your goals.

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) – Seeing Below the Surface

Over the past week we’ve looked at how ultrasonic technology can be applied in different ways, from passive leak detection to steam trap inspections and ultrasonic thickness testing.

Today, we step into another advanced application: Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT).
Unlike conventional ultrasonic thickness testing, PAUT uses multiple elements in a probe that can be pulsed at different times. This allows the ultrasonic beam to be steered, swept, and focused electronically, producing detailed cross-sectional images of the material under test.
This makes PAUT ideal for:
Detecting flaws such as cracks, laminations, and inclusions.
Accurately sizing and positioning defects within the structure.
Inspecting welds, pressure vessels, and critical components where safety is paramount.
In the image shown here, you can see how a lamination within the material (black circle) can be distinguished from the true backwall signal (green box) — the kind of insight that conventional single-beam ultrasonics would struggle to visualise.
The real strength of PAUT is its ability to provide inspectors and engineers with a clear picture of what’s happening beneath the surface — making it an essential tool for flaw detection and integrity assurance.

At Baseline, we support customers across industries in choosing the right ultrasonic technique — whether it’s leak detection, thickness testing, or advanced phased array inspections.

Anybody fancy a brew? hold on.... Milk In First? Absolutely Not… and Here’s the Thermal Proof.

Let’s settle an age-old debate the scientific way…

We ran a thermal imaging experiment with two cups of freshly boiled water: (Video is being played back at 4x speed)

One had “milk” (room-temperature water) added after just 30 seconds.

The other had “milk” (room-temperature water) added much later — after 5 minutes 30 seconds.

The outcome? The milk-later cup cooled faster and ended up about 2°C cooler. Why? Because the hotter something is, the quicker it cools — that’s Newton’s law of cooling in action.

So if you’re short on time in the morning and want your brew drinkable sooner… wait before adding the milk. Newton agrees, science agrees — and besides, no self-respecting tea drinker would ever put the milk in first anyway 😉.

All measured with the FLIR T1020 and analysed in FLIR Thermal Studio software.

Have a lovely weekend, everyone — and may all your teas and coffees be perfectly timed!

Comprehensive Leak Detection Demonstration.

On-site today for one of our established customers we carried out a multi-technology leak detection test / product demonstration, working at 2 bar pressure and verifying sensitivity down to 1×10⁻⁹ mbar∙L/s.
Techniques applied included:

Helium Mass Spectrometry – ultra-high sensitivity down to 10⁻⁹
Ultrasonic Detection – rapid screening of larger leak paths
Acoustic Leak Detection – for gross-to-mid leak localisation
Bubble Testing – simple but effective visual confirmation of leak sites

The simulated leak (which was close to being a hair thickness) was successfully detected, demonstrating how combining methods provides confidence, reliability, and traceability in critical applications.
