🌞 Hot Weather & Lime – Slow and Steady Wins the Race! 🌞

With the current heat, it's important to remember that lime products should never be allowed to dry too quickly.

Unlike cement, lime needs time to cure. If it dries out too fast because of strong sun, high temperatures or drying winds, it can lead to:
❌ Shrinkage cracks
❌ Weak or dusty surfaces
❌ Poor bonding
❌ Reduced durability
❌ Patchy or uneven finishes

Top tips when working in hot weather:
✔️ Dampen the background before applying lime.
✔️ Work in shaded areas where possible.
✔️ Lightly mist the finished work with clean water to slow drying.
✔️ Protect fresh lime with damp hessian or suitable sheeting.
✔️ Avoid applying lime during the hottest part of the day.

Taking a little extra care in hot weather will help your lime cure properly, giving you a stronger, longer-lasting finish.

One of the most common questions we get is:
"What colour should my lime mortar be?"
The answer is... there isn't one!
Traditional lime mortars took their colour from whatever sand was available locally.
A lime mortar made in Kent could look completely different to one made in Yorkshire, Cornwall or Scotland.
Before modern pigments were available, the sand determined the final colour:
🟡 Golden sands produced warm buff mortars ⚪ Pale sands produced light cream mortars 🟤 Iron-rich sands produced brown tones 🔴 Crushed brick and tile dust could add reds and pinks
This is why historic buildings often have so much character. The mortar wasn't chosen from a colour chart – it reflected the local landscape.
At WH Lime Suppliers we can produce coloured lime mortars using a range of sands and pigments, but the sand itself still plays a huge part in the final appearance.
