Seminar in Honour of Professor Peter Flewitt FREng

Join us for a special seminar to celebrate the life and contributions of Professor Peter Flewitt FREng, a distinguished leader in materials science and structural integrity, who sadly passed away on 21 September 2024.

Peter's career spanned decades of impactful work with the Central Electricity Generating Board, its successor organisations, and later as a Visiting Professor at the University of Bristol. He was a driving force behind the Forum for Engineering Structural Integrity ( ), serving as a director from its formation over 20 years ago. With over 250 publications and numerous prestigious awards, Peter's influence reached across industry and academia.

This seminar will feature presentations by leading experts covering topics that reflect Peter’s wide-ranging research interests, including: reheat cracking, creep cavitation, and nuclear graphite etc.

The event will be co-chaired by Professors Bob Ainsworth and Andrew H. Sherry, both internationally recognised figures in engineering structural integrity.

All are welcome. Attendance is free, but registration is required.

13/06/2025

UK FORUM FOR ENGINEERING STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY (FESI), a technology-focused body which brings together industry and academic experts and works to reduce the incidence of engineering failures, has recently been re-energised.

FESI leaders Peter Flewitt and Roderick Smith sadly passed away within three months of each other at the end of 2024, leaving the organisation without a board of directors. We are pleased to announce that the following new directors are now in place:

Dr Mayur Jagatia PhD, Group Director of Amentum’s Materials Science and Structural Integrity (MSSI) business.

Paul Woollin, Research and Quality Assurance Director at TWI

Dr Yiqiang Wang, CEng CSci, In-vessel Engineering Section Leader at the UK Atomic Energy Authority

Professor Michael Fitzpatrick FREng FLSW, University of Leicester and Lloyd’s Register Foundation Chair of Structural Integrity and Systems Performance.

FESI remains a not-for-profit organisation supported by major companies in the engineering sector, leading universities, and public bodies such as the Health and Safety Executive and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL).

Our vision for the re-energised FESI is to be a vibrant community of practice that can raise the awareness of structural integrity and promote higher standards through collaboration and networking between industry, academia and government.

John Sharples, of Amentum, continues his role as FESI Chief Technical Advisor

Brian Daniels, of Amentum, continues as FESI Honorary Treasurer and

Jack Beswick, of Amentum, continues as Chair of the FESI Student and Early Career Council.

FESI now has a new Chief Administrator, Amanda Rabbich, who is the point of contact for member enquiries at [email protected].
