I’m fu**ed off.

Everyone’s crying out that the trade is dying, there’s no fresh blood coming through and we need to give young people a chance.

Well, we are.

We’ve taken on a 21-year-old plant fitter with a clean driving history (Shout out to Ben, you’ve fu***ng bossed it this week cha!.)

We’re investing in him, training him and giving him the opportunity to learn a proper skilled trade.

And then you try to insure him on a service van so he can actually get to site and do his job…

Thousands. Or insurers simply don’t want to know.

As a business, we already pay for Employers’ Liability, Goods in Transit, Premises cover and Motor Trade/Road Risk. We’re not looking to cut corners or dodge the cost of doing things properly.

We just want a realistic way to insure a young fitter.

The irony?

We can trust a 21-year-old to work alongside us repairing and maintaining machinery worth hundreds of thousands of pounds…

All insurances are good to go but apparently putting him behind the wheel of a 2.0 Transit is where they draw the line???

So when everyone asks:

“Where are all the young plant fitters?”

Maybe part of the answer is that businesses willing to give them a fu***ng chance are being hit with barriers at every turn.

The trade needs fresh blood. Without it, there isn’t a future.

So we need some help from the industry.

If you run plant fitters and employ younger lads and lasses, who are you insured with?

We’re fully insured now but we renew in December and I wanna get my ducks in a row!!

WHAT’S ACTUALLY MAKING OUR INDUSTRY HARDER? 🔧

Heavy plant has never been an easy game, but the job is changing.

Machines are more complicated. Parts are harder to get. Downtime is more expensive. And experienced engineers are becoming harder to find.

A plant engineer today needs to understand mechanics, hydraulics, electrics, CAN systems, diagnostics, software and emissions and sometimes all on the same machine.

And a fault code doesn’t tell you what’s broken. It tells you what the machine thinks is wrong. There’s a big difference.

Then you finally diagnose it…

“Back order. No confirmed delivery date, long lead times.”

So can we repair it? Fabricate it? Modify it? Find an alternative?

That’s where experience matters.

There’s a massive difference between changing a component and understanding why it failed in the first place.

Sometimes it still comes down to a multimeter, pressure gauge, years of experience and:

“What the f**k is it doing that for?” 😂

It’s demanding, dirty and often times frustrating as hell.

But turning up to something dead and leaving it working?

Still the best bit. 🔧

I’ve got a proper love-hate relationship with this turbine. Hydraulically, it’s right up my street but maintaining a system like this is a different game. Controlled shutdowns, pressure isolation, stored energy, systems to wind down and lock off… there’s a hell of a lot that has to happen before the spanners even come out.

Some customers have been with you from the very beginning and TreeClear UK are one of ours. 🤝🌲

They’ve been a DXN customer since day one, and over the years it’s meant we’ve had the opportunity to work on some seriously interesting bits of kit, often in some equally interesting places.
