It's fitted with the electric start option, that was used to turn over the big 7.7 litre diesel engine that when started would run economically for days on end.

The roots of this gem go right back to 1945 when Albert Friedrich forged ahead to form Unimog. In 1972, Daimler-Benz created a purpose built high-speed, mid-mounted cab, four-wheel drive agricultural tractor called the MB-trac (Mercedes-Benz Tractors). By 1991 41,000 had been made in this set up.

The New Holland's heritage is a diverse one. It was founded in Pennsylvania 1895 in New Holland. In 1986 it was taken over by Ford. Then, in 1991 Fiat took over and in 1999 Case-IH merged to form CNH (Case New Holland). The 7.225 features a Maserati blue livery and is part of the award-winning T7 range, which is made at the Basildon factory in Essex.

The Milwaukee-based company were very much into heavy industrial manufacturing, but its early tractors, were nothing to write home about. Then came a change of colour and the model U, which was in production from 19292 until 1952. It was the first tractor in the world to be sold with pneumatic tyres (Firestone) in1932 (although the example here has steel wheels).

The biggest selling tractor in Europe in the 50s and early 60s was the Fordson E1A Major Diesel made in Dagenham, London. A lovely tractor to drive, it started off with 38hp and by the end of its time, with the late 1962 Super Major New Performance; it had been able to produce 58hp from the same basic engine.
