"Purposeful activity" is a term used widely across the custodial sector. For HMIP, it is one of four healthy prison tests, and in the 2025–26 annual report it was the weakest of the four.

The test is not time out of cell alone. It is whether people in custody can, and are expected to, take part in activity likely to benefit them. Unlocked is not the same as occupied.

In practice, inspectors look for time out of cell that is regular and predictable, activities that run on time, and constructive use of unlocked time, including at weekends.

The Energy Wall does not replace education, skills or work. It supports constructive use of unlocked time, with short, bounded sessions sited on the wing and working within the regime.

Most custodial activity provision focuses on fitness. That suits some residents, but leaves others disengaged.

Gym access is also limited by space, staffing and movement, and not every resident is confident or willing to take part.

Combining movement with focus, reaction and decision-making engages a broader range of people. When cognition is part of the task, fitness level matters less. Sessions gain a clear purpose, stay accessible and remain engaging over time.

The Energy Wall combines movement, reaction and sensory feedback in short, structured sessions. It fits existing spaces and works within the regime.

Purposeful activity is often delivered but inconsistently recorded. When reporting comes round, the picture is incomplete.

The reasons are practical. Staff time is stretched, recording adds another task to a full shift, and informal activity rarely has a clear start or finish to log.

Evidence starts with structure. Bounded, consistent sessions are simpler to count, compare and report on, without adding staff paperwork. Good records then support more than inspection, informing planning, commissioning and decisions about where provision is working.

The Energy Wall delivers short, structured sessions with a clear start and finish, designed to sit within the regime and support consistent, recordable provision.

New equipment often arrives with new work. Training sessions, cover arrangements and time off the landing can outweigh the benefit before the kit is properly in use.

Onboarding has to work around shift patterns, limited cover and staff turnover. Anything that relies on one trained champion is fragile.

Most of the onboarding burden is decided at the design stage. Equipment that is simple to run needs less explaining and is easier to hand on. That means a short handover on shift, steps that fit on one page, the same approach across every shift, and reference materials kept to hand.

The Energy Wall runs in bounded sessions with a clear start and finish, so staff can pick it up quickly and run it consistently.

Governors are asked to show that provision is used and worth keeping. "Staff say it's popular" rarely holds up in a review or funding conversation.

The challenge is that value has to be shown without being overstated. Staff time for data collection is limited, and outcomes like wellbeing or behaviour have many causes.

Evidence-led means measuring what you can stand behind. Start with use: how often sessions run, how many take part, and when in the regime they happen. Note voluntary return. Keep staff observations short and structured. Report outcomes as contributions, not causes.

The Energy Wall runs in bounded sessions with a clear start and finish, so use is straightforward to count and schedule within the regime.

Durability is often treated as a spec on a data sheet. In a secure environment, it's closer to a continuity issue, what happens to the regime when equipment goes out of service?

Secure environments see high, sustained use with little tolerance for downtime. A repair delay doesn't just remove a product, it removes a fixed point in the regime that residents and staff have come to rely on. Durability should be assessed by continuity of provision, not just materials.

Servicing shouldn't require extended facility access or removal from the wing, the simpler the access, the shorter the disruption. A regime built around a piece of equipment only holds if that equipment stays available.

The Energy Wall is built for sustained use in secure environments, with servicing designed to minimise disruption to the wing and the regime around it.

Facilitation load rarely gets factored into activity provision early enough. On paper, a session can look simple, in practice, setup, supervision levels and es**rt requirements determine what it actually costs the working day.

Every additional location means an additional movement decision. Every supervision requirement means staff unavailable elsewhere. None of this shows up until delivery, by which point it's already a staffing problem.

Low-facilitation activity changes that. Minimal setup, appropriate supervision, no added es**rt burden, delivered within existing movement protocols, provision that's predictable enough to plan around.

The Energy Wall is designed around this reality. Facilitation load isn't an afterthought, it's a starting requirement, because provision that isn't sustainable for staff isn't sustainable at all.

Activity provision is often assessed on engagement value alone. Less visible, but just as important: how predictable is it for the staff managing the shift around it?

Open-ended sessions are hard to plan around, timings can't be relied on, and the shift has to flex to fit the activity rather than the other way round. Predictability isn't a soft benefit. It's an operational one.

Bounded sessions have a known length from the outset. They end on time, so handover stays simple and supervision levels can be planned for the full session rather than adjusted mid-way.

The Energy Wall supports bounded, time-boxed sessions by design, a clear start and finish that staff can plan shifts and handovers around.

New equipment on a wing raises one question first: what does it mean for movement. Es**rt routes, headcounts, sightlines, transition points, any addition has to justify its place within them.

Security and movement protocols aren't flexible, so the right approach isn't fitting equipment in. It's identifying where it already fits.

Fixed, wall-mounted placement supports predictable movement and inherited sightlines, no new supervision requirements, no separate scheduling, no additional es**rt step.

The Energy Wall is designed to sit within existing wing layouts and movement protocols, supervised the same way as the space around it.

Most custodial settings have a storeroom that tells a story, equipment bought with good intentions, used a handful of times, then quietly retired from active use.

It's rarely a fault of the equipment itself. It's a fault of fit, with staffing, with routine, with how the regime actually runs day to day. Kit that depends on extra facilitation gets sidelined first; kit that fits existing routine stays in use.

The procurement question that matters isn't "will this get used once?" It's "will this still be in use in twelve months?"

Embedding isn't accidental, it's designed in from the outset, with low setup, minimal facilitation and a clear start and finish. This is why the Energy Wall is built for low-facilitation use, designed to stay in active rotation rather than become another underused fixture.
