Rock Bottom to Roaming A dad who hit rock bottom
A mum who nearly broke
Two wild little boys
One dog
One big truck
One big plan to give back
This is Rock Bottom to Roaming.

I called it rock bottom at the time. Looking back, it wasn’t.

When you’re in it, it feels like the floor. Like there’s nowhere lower to go and nothing else that can be taken off you. That’s how it felt to me.

But I still had so much left to lose. My family. My health. Time. The people who stuck around. That’s not the bottom. That’s a man who still had everything that actually mattered and couldn’t see it for the mess in front of him.

It wasn’t the bottom. It was just another kicking. Another lesson. Another shove onto the path I was meant to be on.

That’s the thing about rock bottom. You only know where it was once you’re well past it. While you’re stood in it, you can’t tell the difference between the end of the road and a turn in it.

So if you’re calling where you are right now the bottom, be careful. It might just be a turn in the road. And the turn’s the point. Life isn’t finishing you off. It’s sending you somewhere.

Rock Bottom to Roaming. That’s not just a name. That’s the route.

Hard Truth #5 is about what the fall strips away, and who’s still stood next to you when it’s done.

If you’ve been through something you thought was the end and it turned out it wasn’t, drop it in the comments or send me a message. I read every one.

There’s a version of you on the other side of all this. You’ve just not met him yet.

You don’t get to him by dodging the hard stuff. You don’t get round it, over it or under it. You go straight through it, and you come out the other end different. That’s the only road there is.

I’m not the bloke I was before all this. Good. He couldn’t have done what’s coming. He’d have wanted it easy, and it was never going to be easy.

Here’s the bit nobody wants to hear. Nobody’s coming to fix it. Nobody owes you a softer ride. You can wait for someone to turn up and sort it, but you’ll be waiting a long time.

Feeling sorry for yourself is just loss with a seat and a brew. It’s comfy for a bit. Stay there too long and it stays with you.

The flip side is this. Every loss teaches you to stand up quicker. You stop being scared of the floor, because you’ve been on it and you got back up.

So accept what’s happened. All of it. The bits you’d change and the bits you can’t. Then start paying attention to what’s coming, because that’s where you’re actually going.

Through heartache, beautiful things. That’s not a slogan. That’s the receipt.

Hard Truth #4 is about the day I realised it wasn’t rock bottom at all.

If you’re stuck in the middle of it right now and can’t see the other side yet, drop it in the comments or send me a message. I read every one.

Life is going to kick you in the dick. Over and over. That’s not a complaint, that’s the deal. Nobody gets out of it.

For years I thought the kickings were the problem. Something to get past, get over, get away from. Every one of them felt like proof that life had it in for me. I’d pick myself up, dust off, and spend the next six months waiting for the next one.

Turns out the kickings were the point.

I needed putting in my place. I needed beating down. Not because I deserved it, and not because there’s some big plan where it all makes sense at the end. It’s simpler than that. The bloke I was wasn’t built for what was coming. He couldn’t have carried it. He’d have folded at the first real weight. Every kicking was knocking a bit of that bloke off and leaving something harder underneath.

It changes the day you stop asking “why me” and start asking “what’s this for”. Same kicking, different question. One keeps you on the floor, the other gets you up.

And once you’ve got that, you can look back at the worst of it and appreciate it. Not enjoy it. I’m not that daft. Appreciate it, like you’d appreciate a hard apprenticeship. You hated every day of it and you wouldn’t be any good without it.

That’s when you stop bracing for the next kick. Not because it’s not coming. It is. You just stop fearing it, because you’ve seen what the last ones did to you and you came out the other side carrying more.

Hard Truth #3 is about the bloke on the other side of all this. You’ve not met him yet.

If you’ve had a kicking lately that you’re still trying to make sense of, drop it in the comments or send me a message. I read every one.

I didn’t think I’d be able to do this.
Six months ago I couldn’t have told you what an app was. Twenty years building custom vehicles, never touched software. This is Rocko. She’s the brain of our truck, and I built her.
Every level and every temperature on one screen. Every switch, pump and sensor on one app, by voice, and on two screens in the cab. Say “arrive” and the legs go down, the deck comes out, the solar slides out, the lights come on. Handbrake off? She won’t move a thing.
The truck’s a 2014 Mercedes Arocs 6x6 we’re turning into our home. We leave Barnsley on 1 September 2027. Six years round the world. Me, Sarah, the two lads and Peanut.
If you’d told me a year ago I’d be doing this, I’d have laughed. Rock bottom to roaming.
The kit that runs her is the kit that gets filmed for six years. In talks with the people below. If you make something that belongs on this truck, get in touch.
