A reconfiguration before the peak season usually comes down to one of two goals: getting more storage out of the same building, or making the site run more efficiently.

That might mean adding beam levels or reworking aisles to create more pallet locations, or moving fast-moving lines closer to dispatch and setting up a dedicated pick area.

Whether you have planned the new layout with your client or are delivering a plan they have already made, the work rarely stops at the racking. Moved beam levels can leave mesh decks that no longer fit the altered bays, a new pick area needs shelving that keeps fast-moving lines within easy reach, and re-zoning means new boundaries around the changed areas. New walkways create traffic routes that need protecting, and every change needs signage that matches the layout people will work in.

If a site needs extending, repairing or reconfiguring for the upcoming peak season, now is the time to do it, before the busiest weeks of the year arrive.

A site may require one or a combination of these to get it ready, but in all cases, you will consider the site as a whole, not just the racking.

New bays may need the same protection as the existing aisles, a bay that keeps taking impacts may need protection added as well as replacement components, and once a layout changes, the load notices, aisle markers and safety signs that described the old one no longer match.

Falling stock and a collapsing bay are two risks a site must design against, and it matters even more where people work alongside automated equipment.

How much of your client's automated zone is actually enclosed, and how much is just assumed to be off-limits?

Protection, segregation and signage rarely come from the same supplier, but on an automated site they need to work as one.

As QTS has grown, we can now offer you all three (and more) as a cohesive solution from one place.

Protection starts at the points where different types of traffic meet: crossing points, transfer stations, charging areas and the ends of aisles, where impact protection and racking protection absorb what a forklift or AGV would otherwise pass straight through to the structure or the person nearby.

Combined with appropriate access points and suitable locking options, zoning keeps people out of automated zones and stock inside the rack.
