Coloplast

Coloplast Coloplast develops products and services that make life easier for people with very personal and private medical conditions.

The Coloplast story is one of passion and commitment

It all started back in 1954. Nurse Elise Sørensen was concerned by the dramatic change in her sister’s lifestyle following an ostomy operation. Thora no longer dared to go out, fearing that her stoma would leak in public. Elise was determined to help her sister out of her isolation. She came up with the idea of an ostomy bag with an adhesive ri

ng, which would make it fit tightly to the skin. This would prevent leakage and give her sister – and thousands of people like her – the chance to return to their normal life. A simple solution with great significance. Today, our business includes ostomy care, urology and continence care and wound and skin care. In all these areas, we are guided by Elise's passion and commitment. Like her, we work closely with people who have intimate healthcare needs. We listen to their needs and respond with products and services that make their lives easier.

Could you see your urine as wisdom and not waste?

Urine can reveal important clues about our health. We all know that we should aim for urine that's a pale straw colour. The colour and odour can change if you've not had enough to drink, if you've eaten certain foods or even through exercise or medicines. Download our diet and hydration factsheet for more information. If you can rule out hydration or food and have dark or strong smelling urine, please speak to your healthcare professional.

How does your urinary system work?

Urine is made by the kidneys as they constantly filter blood. The urine is then stored in the bladder. Normally, when the bladder has about 300ml of urine, it sends a signal to the brain that it's time to go to the toilet. We normally talk about urine being waste but challenges us to see urine as wisdom instead. Each time we go to the toilet, urine can give us useful indicators about our health.

September is Urology Awareness Month.
Many of us will experience some sort of urology condition in our lifetime. Urology includes the whole of the urinary system including the kidneys and, for men, the prostate and ge****ls. This year's theme of 'Worth its Weight in Gold' talks about the importance of recognising symptoms of urology issues, making good lifestyle choices and, where appropriate, speaking to a healthcare professional for advice.

Look out for our next post on how the urinary system works.

Millions of people live with bladder and bowel issues, yet its rarely talked about. They're often dismissed as just a part of getting older or something to put up with. Social stigma stops us from talking about and even seeking help for these treatable problems. We call this the loo taboo.

If you are experiencing challenges with your bladder or bowel, please speak to a healthcare professional for advice.
