Staff bead fixing the adjustable way.

Traditionally timber staff beads are usually fixed by banging wooden wedges or pegs in the masonry joints, plumbed and cut and then the bead nailed to them.
We’ve been doing it that way too for many years until last year we removed some early Victorian lime plaster on some huge arched windows along with the damaged beads. We found they had been fixed using lead strips nailed to the back of the bead rather than wooden pegs.
Replacing them “like for like” we found it was an ingenious way to roughly fix them in place and then knock them level on the firm but flexible lead tabs. 👌
