Youth Canoe Polo Tournament Makes a Splash in Kendal
Penrith Canoe Club brought together young paddlers from across the North of England on Saturday 22nd November for a lively and inspiring Youth Canoe Polo Tournament at Kendal Leisure Centre. Supported by funding from the NWC Regional League, the event helped reduce participation costs for families while giving dozens of young players valuable competitive experience.

A total of 33 junior athletes took part, forming six mixed teams representing four clubs: Penrith Canoe Club, Pennine Canoe Club, Liverpool Canoe Club, and Red Rose Canoe Club. Over the course of the afternoon an impressive 90 goals were scored, with many close, competitive fixtures showcasing the growing strength of youth canoe polo across the region.

A Youth-Led Sporting Event

One of the defining features of the tournament was that it was run almost entirely by young people themselves. Junior referees, scorekeepers and team captains took responsibility for officiating and managing games throughout the event. Their confidence and professionalism earned high praise from coaches, parents and members of the NWC Canoe Polo Committee who attended in support.

For many of the young paddlers, this was their first-ever tournament, including several who have only been learning the sport for just a few months. Despite their limited experience, all players demonstrated impressive progress, determination and strong team spirit.

Competitive Results

Teams competed under their bib colours in Division 4, with Light Blue topping the final standings:

- Light Blue
- Red
- Yellow
- Dark Blue
- Dark Green
- Black and Teal

Top goal scorers on the day included:

- Brandon (Light Blue) – 11 goals
- Joshua H (Black and Teal) – 8 goals
- Tom (Dark Blue) – 6 goals
- Dylan R (Yellow) – 6 goals
- Dylan C (Red) – 5 goals

In the girls’ fixtures, top scoring honours were shared between Maeve, Eloise, and Alex.

Remarkably, no cards were issued in any match—reflecting excellent sportsmanship from all teams.
Highlights Across All Clubs

Parents and coaches reported overwhelmingly positive experiences, noting:

- Valuable first-time competition opportunities
- Junior-led refereeing and scoring
- Strong leadership from young team captains
- Close games with high goal counts
- Rapid improvement from new paddlers
- Excellent collaboration between Penrith, Pennine, Liverpool, Lakeland and Red Rose Canoe Clubs

Liverpool Canoe Club later shared a detailed match report praising their “Black and Teal” junior team, who improved every game and were only narrowly beaten by some of the top-performing sides. The team highlighted standout performances from Joshua Hale in attack and Finn in goal, while Bea and Clara helped secure a 4–1 win in an additional girls’ match. Prizes and end-of-day celebrations were led by Hilary from Penrith Canoe Club, who organised the tournament.

Following discussions with QEGS, we are pleased to announce that Penrith Canoe Club is now supporting the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) program.

For the purposes of the award, Canoe Polo will be recognised as a Physical Activity. However, if you are aiming to meet a different section of the DofE through your involvement, please speak to me—we may be able to create a custom program that suits your goals.

Program Overview

Our approach focuses on two key areas: commitment and personal development.
There is no fixed pathway for completing the award through this program. Instead, you will need to demonstrate consistent and progressive personal development over time.

1. Commitment

To complete this section, you need to show regular participation and commitment to the physical activity.

How to track your attendance:

- Use the printed tracking sheet.
- For each session, write a brief description and tick the "Attend" box.
- Ask one of the coaches to sign your sheet on the night.

You may back-date entries to 1st September, but going forward, signatures must be obtained at the session.
Regular Monday evening training sessions count toward this requirement. When recording, please indicate which group you're in by including (1), (2), or (3) in the session description.

2. Extend

This section is for recording activities that go above and beyond your regular training. These should involve at least 30 minutes of additional effort focused on developing your skills or deepening your involvement in the sport.

Examples of qualifying activities:

- Attending a more advanced pool session than your usual group
- Participating in a referee course
- Competing in a tournament
- Joining an external training session (e.g. Kendal, York, or Liverpool)
- Taking part in morning training or Cumbria-wide sessions

What doesn't count:
- Basic rolling practice in the small pool
- Informal jostling games in the small pool
These are considered part of your normal development and are already covered by your regular attendance.

A Few Final Notes

You are responsible for printing your own attendance sheet and bringing it to sessions to be signed.
All coaches will be briefed on the program and are authorised to sign your sheets.
While we’ll allow retrospective signatures for September, going forward, all sessions must be signed off on the night.

If you have any questions or want to tailor your DofE involvement through canoeing, don’t hesitate to come and have a chat.
