This World Pest Day, we're recognising the vital role pest management professionals play in protecting public health.

In this video, Dr Matthew Davies reflects on the recent hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship from the Netherlands and what it means for our industry. Affecting people from multiple countries, the incident serves as a reminder that pest-related public health risks don't recognise borders.

Through Integrated Pest Management (IPM), our industry works to prevent, monitor and manage pest risks in a way that protects people, businesses, wildlife and the environment.

It's why pest management is about more than controlling pests. It's about safeguarding public health.

Today, we celebrate the professionals working every day to protect everyone and everything around us.

When we think about proofing, we often focus on preventing pests from entering buildings or blocking access to voids and harbourage areas.

But proofing is also about preventing unnecessary harm.

In this video, Killgerm Technical Manager Melvin Knapp highlights a pipe that leads nowhere, yet a mouse became trapped inside it. Open-ended pipes and similar structures can pose a risk not only to rodents but also to other wildlife.

A simple proofing measure can help prevent animals from becoming trapped while reducing potential pest issues.

Yellow-Legged Hornet (AKA Asian Hornet) Update

The National Bee Unit has reported five further credible Yellow-Legged Hornet (Vespa velutina) sightings in Great Britain on 22nd May 2026:

📍 Shirley, Southampton
📍 New Romney, Kent
📍 Charing, Ashford, Kent
📍 Rother, East Sussex (2 sightings)

Several hornets were captured and killed, while investigations continue in some locations.

Alongside these latest sightings, Defra has confirmed a change in its approach for 2026. Following evidence suggesting a limited established population of Yellow-Legged Hornets in England, spring trapping will not take place this year. Instead, efforts will focus on investigating credible reports and locating and destroying nests later in the season.

Accurate identification and reporting remain important. If you spot a suspected Yellow-Legged Hornet, please report it using the:

A great morning out for our Area Sales Manager Gerry this week, joining Joe Hunter in North West Scotland for a visit to a poultry farm showcasing pest management best practice.

From checking bait points inside, outside and even in roof spaces, to excellent housekeeping and biosecurity measures, it was a brilliant example of what effective pest control looks like in the field.

A few highlights from the visit:
✔️ Clear site lines around buildings
✔️ Minimal rodent activity
✔️ Evidence of effective mouse bait-take using quality product
✔️ No insect activity spotted
✔️ Shoe dips at all critical control points

It’s always valuable seeing strong pest management standards in action and working alongside customers who take biosecurity seriously.

Thanks to Joe Hunter for the tour!
