✨ A giant periodic table engineered using aluminium profile ✨

A project to mark this week’s GCSE Chemistry exam! We're revisiting one of the more unique projects we’ve had the pleasure of supporting alongside University of Warwick.

Back in 2019, the International Year of the Periodic Table celebrated 150 years since the creation of the table of elements. As part of the celebrations, Warwick University approached us to help bring their vision for a giant illuminated periodic table to life.

The final structure measured an impressive:
📏 3.6m x 2.7m x 2m

Using the mk aluminium profile system allowed the structure to be:
📍 Strong and robust
📍 Modular and easy to assemble
📍 Visually clean and professional
📍 Built without welding, grinding, or painting

The combination of mk’s 25 and 40 series profiles provided the ideal balance between lightweight construction and structural strength for this exhibition piece.

Once delivered, students at Warwick University assembled the structure before integrating:
💡 1064 LEDs
💡 126 controllers
💡 Individually addressable illuminated elements

The completed display was first showcased at the Royal Society Summer Exhibition in London before appearing at further events throughout the year.

Projects like this demonstrate how versatile aluminium profile systems can be — not only for industrial automation and machine builds, but also for creative STEM, exhibition, and educational applications.

A fantastic project to have been involved with and a great example of engineering and education working together. 👏

How do you keep production running smoothly when upstream and downstream processes operate at different speeds?

For one office supplies manufacturer, the cutting system produces 6 carton blank stacks per minute, while the downstream magazines process only 4 stacks per minute.
