McCann are proud to be celebrating International Women’s Day this week!

The theme this year is “Give to Gain”, emphasising the power of reciprocity, mentorship and meaningful support. When we invest our time, knowledge and encouragement into others, we not only help them grow, we also strengthen our own teams, our industry and our communities in return.

There was no better way to begin the week than by visiting Weatherhead High School, an inspiring 11–18 girls’ comprehensive school in Wirral, to deliver a careers talk to their students.

Our Culture and Social Impact Manager, Kate Barrett, alongside Quantity Surveyor, Lucy Parker, introduced students to McCann and showcased the wide range of opportunities available across the Highways, Construction and Infrastructure sectors. From project management and quantity surveying to engineering, design, sustainability, social impact and beyond, the session highlighted that there is no single pathway into our industry, and that diverse skills, perspectives and ambitions are what drive it forward.

It was fantastic to see such curiosity, confidence and engagement from the students. By sharing real career journeys and honest insights, we hope we’ve helped demystify the industry and demonstrate that these careers are accessible, rewarding and open to everyone.

International Women’s Day is not just about celebration; it’s about action. “Give to Gain” reminds us that small contributions of time and encouragement can have a lasting impact. If we want a more inclusive, innovative and representative industry, we must continue showing up, speaking out and supporting the next generation.

Here’s to creating opportunities, building confidence and inspiring future leaders, not just this week, but all year round.

📢Calling all Chilwell (Nottingham, UK) locals and businesses📢

To better support our local community, we’ve relocated our defibrillator from inside our office at McCann House to an external emergency cabinet just outside our building, ensuring faster and easier access in a cardiac emergency.

The cabinet is located on the right-hand side of the fire escape on Ranson Road, and the defibrillator is now registered with East Midlands Ambulance Service, making it available 24/7 for community use.

Defibrillators save lives and early access can significantly improve survival rates in cases of sudden cardiac arrest, which is why making this device publicly accessible is so important to McCann.

What an honour and privilege to attend the 2025 Heroes Awards in London last month.

The McCann team had a wonderful evening celebrating some truly exceptional people from across our industry. The stories of kindness, selflessness, and going above and beyond were deeply inspiring, and every nominee and winner was more than deserving of the recognition they received.

Congratulations to all of the winners and nominees 👏

We were very happy to support the Christmas Gift Donation Drive, in partnership with The Salvation Army Hoxton, by donating presents to help bring some festive cheer. McCann were grateful to be there, to celebrate others, hear their stories, and recognise the positive impact they continue to make within our industry!

Congratulations to our very own Raymond for winning Skanska’s Observation of the Month!

While working on the M42 J6 project, Raymond noted that “fly-tipping was recorded at PMA along the verge area. The affected access road verge area, which is used by the public and our operational teams, was left with debris and waste.”

He then went above and beyond his usual duties by arranging traffic management to temporarily close the road for a short duration and removed the fly-tipped rubbish using a grab lorry. Raymond took the waste back to the compound for safe disposal.

Well done, Raymond, not only for winning this award but also for going above and beyond in your role and keeping the site and highways safe and clean!

Skanska, working for National Highways, are leading the major upgrade of the M42 Junction 6 in Solihull, to relieve severe congestion and support future regional growth. As a key delivery partner, McCann handled extensive works including street lighting, traffic signals, communications, drainage, kerbing, footpaths, ducting, cabling, technology installations, and structural concrete across two contract packages.

🚨New work alert!🚨

McCann is proud to announce that we have been awarded a £2.3million lighting, traffic signal and signs, and motorway communications package as part of the M3 Junction 9 Improvements Scheme by VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd / Balfour Beatty plc Joint Venture (VFBB JV).

Speaking on the award, Carl Lancaster, McCann Ltd’s Operations Director, said, “We are proud to be supporting Volker Fitzpatrick, Balfour Beatty and National Highways on this major transport enhancement for Wi******er. This scheme represents a significant investment in road safety, connectivity and infrastructure resilience, and we are pleased to contribute our expertise in lighting, traffic signals, signage and motorway communications. Being trusted with such a vital package of works underlines our reputation for delivering high-quality, safety-critical infrastructure projects across the UK.”

Well done to all our team who worked on securing this project; this appointment is a credit to all their hard work and dedication over the past few months!

Spreading the Christmas cheer for all to see!!🎄🎅💡

For the past few weeks, our Christmas elves (the wonderful Suffolk County Council street lighting team!) have been spreading the Christmas cheer, installing Ipswich Town Centre's festive lighting!

On Sunday, the team, along with the local community, celebrated the Mayor of Ipswich, Councillor Stefan Long, switching the lights on, a special performance from the cast of Ipswich Regent Theatre’s 2025 festive pantomime, Cinderella, and live musical entertainment.

Our team are responsible for the inspection, maintenance, installation and removal of the seasonal festive lights in the Ipswich Town centre on behalf of Ipswich Borough Council, keeping the festive spirit until 6th January!

We are pleased to welcome Ciaran Bartram and Riley Liggins to our Suffolk Street Lighting Team as Apprentices. Both bring valuable practical experience and enthusiasm to their new roles, and we look forward to supporting their development within the electrical industry.

Meet our new apprentices ⬇️

Ciaran joins us having previously worked at Clay Ltd in the bindery department, where he supported the final stages of book production, gaining strong attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to work effectively under pressure. He has also gained experience working alongside a self-employed electrician on domestic installations, carrying out first and second fix work while completing his Level 2 & 3 Electrical qualifications at East Coast College.
Ciaran is keen to broaden his technical knowledge, enhance his problem-solving skills, and contribute to sustainable projects that directly benefit local communities across the county.

Riley joins us with experience from a family-run multi-trade business, where he supported a variety of projects, including school renovations, summer house construction, and window installations. He has also worked for Royal Mail, developing strong communication, route planning, and customer service skills.
Riley is motivated to build a long-term career in the electrical industry, following in the footsteps of several family members who work within street lighting across the country.

We are delighted to have Ciaran and Riley join our team and look forward to seeing their skills and confidence develop as they begin their careers in street lighting.

On Monday 3rd November, our team had the pleasure of supporting local students at the Suffolk FutureSkills Fair, held at Suffolk New College, Ipswich Campus.

This marks our second year attending and sponsoring the event, a fantastic opportunity to connect with young people exploring future career paths and to showcase what our industry has to offer.

We were delighted to see such enthusiasm and curiosity from the students who took part in our “Best Question” competition. Some of the thought-provoking questions included:
💡 How do you get into this line of work?
🛠 “What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career?”
🚧 “How many people die per year falling off a cherry picker?”
🌍 “What is the biggest challenge your company has, and what can I do to help with it?”

Thank you to our colleagues who took time our of their day to support the fair and drum up some interest for our industry! Our own Alex Dobre shared, “It was great to demonstrate how our MEWP works and explain to the students the different types of work we use it for.”

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand and to Suffolk New College for hosting another excellent event. We're proud to support the development of future talent right here in our community👷‍♂️👷‍♀️

This month, team “Mc Can Do” - Keith Scott, Josh Hobson, Adam Fitzgerald and Richard Kaye – are supporting Age UK Nottingham and Nottinghamshire in a sponsored walk with Balfour Beatty in the Step to Connect Challenge.

The team will be walking 10,000 steps every day in October, which is equivalent to crossing the Nottingham Footbridge, which the team are currently constructing, 100 times each day!

Age UK Nottingham and Nottinghamshire provides a wide range of services for older or vulnerable people from all communities and backgrounds in the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire area. Last year, they helped over 42,000 people with managing money, staying connected, living well at home, and supporting them with practical information and advice.
