It might be tempting to get all of the gardening jobs done and out of the way as soon as possible this summer, but is July the best time to tackle the hedges?

The best time to cut back overgrown hedges is between September and February. This is because the main bird breeding season is around March to the end of August. Hedges are the perfect hiding spots for birds to safely look after their chicks, so before you begin any work on your bushes and hedges, you will need to check for active nests.

For agricultural land, this is even more important. Hedgerow management rules strictly prohibit cutting or trimming between 1 March and 31 August.

If your hedges are on residential property and are free of nests, you can safely start up the hedge trimmer and get to work.

Not sure which machine is best for the job? We have a huge range of Husqvana hedgecutters in store or online at https://www.hallspower.co.uk/shop?Category=Hedgecutter

Summer can be tough on lawns. Here are three things to keep in mind this month to keep yours looking its best.

How often to mow: Weekly mowing is fine through a normal UK summer, but if it turns hot and dry, ease back to every 10-14 days. Growth slows in the heat, and cutting too often puts the grass under unnecessary stress.

Cutting height: Raise your cutting height in hot weather. Longer grass shades the soil, holds moisture better, and handles the heat without scorching.

Watering: If you do water, do it early morning or evening and never in the midday sun. A deep, infrequent soak is better than a light sprinkle every day, as it encourages roots to grow downward rather than sitting near the surface.
