Diesel engines naturally generate a lot of heat, especially in a hardworking forklift. Overheating can lead to expensive repairs and costly downtime due to the time the forklift is out of action. Common causes of overheating include coolant leaks, malfunctioning thermostats, clogged radiators etc.

To help prevent overheating, regularly inspect coolant levels and hoses, and keep the radiators clean as possible. If you do have an overheating scenario, to avoid engine damage, we’d still highly recommend getting in touch with a qualified forklift engineer; even if topping the coolant up provided a temporary remedy to the issue.

Forklift oil maintenance requires a rigorous schedule to maximise equipment lifespan. For IC engines, change the engine oil and filter every 250 operational hours (or every 6 months).

Check hydraulic oil monthly and replace it every 500-1,000 hours, ensuring the forks are lowered before measuring.

Key Forklift Oil Specifications and Procedures:
Maintaining the correct fluid grades and understanding proper measurement techniques ensures peak operational efficiency and prevents expensive hydrostatic failures.

Engine Oil (IC Forklifts)
Interval: Every 200–250 operational hours.
Viscosity: Standard 10W-30 or 15W-40 (consult manual for extreme indoor/outdoor temperature ranges).
Measurement: Turn the engine off and wait 30 minutes. Pull the dipstick and ensure the oil level falls between the hash marks.

Hydraulic Oil
Interval: Every 500–1,000 operational hours.
Viscosity: Typically ISO 32 or ISO 46.
Measurement: Run the vehicle to warm the fluid. Park on level ground, lower the forks fully, tilt the mast back, and apply the parking brake before checking the dipstick or sight glass.

Transmission / Differential Oil
Interval: Every 600–1,000 operational hours.
Type: Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) or heavy-duty hydrostatic fluid (HTF).
