The “Stability Triangle” Theory Of Forklifts

The center of gravity of all counterbalance forklifts moves within an area called the “stability triangle.”

Triangle composition: This triangle is formed by the center points of the two front wheels and the center point of the rear axle pivot (applicable to both single and dual rear wheel designs).

Safety key: When the forklift is loaded, the combined center of gravity of the forklift, load, and operator must always remain within the boundary of this “stability triangle.” Once the center of gravity moves outside this area, the forklift will tip over sideways or forward. This is why operators are strictly prohibited from lifting while turning or driving at high speed.

In the UK, a forklift should generally be serviced every 250 to 500 operating hours or every 3 to 6 months, whichever comes first, depending on usage intensity and the manufacturer's guidelines.

Service Intervals by Usage:
Light use (under 10 hours a week): Serviced every 6 months.
Standard use (15 to 30 hours a week): Serviced every 3 months or 250 to 500 hours.
Heavy use or multi-shift (over 40 hours a week / harsh environments): Serviced every 1 to 2 months or 50 to 100 hours.

Legal Requirements (LOLER)
Thorough Examination: Under UK law (LOLER 1998 and PUWER 1998) a formal Thorough Examination must be carried out at least every 12 months.

Increased Frequency: High-risk or intensive applications (such as handling dangerous goods or multi-shift operations) require a Thorough Examination every 4 or 6 months.

The Forklift Mast Can Perform “Free Lift”

When a forklift enters a low-clearance area (such as inside a container or a low doorway), it needs to raise the forks first while the mast itself cannot rise. This function is called free lift.

Application scenario: When stacking goods inside a container, the free lift function allows the operator to stack goods above the first layer without touching the top of the container.

Forklift Load Capacity Relies Entirely On The “Counterweight”

The load-bearing principle of a counterbalance forklift is essentially a large “seesaw” principle.

Working principle: A very heavy counterweight (usually a cast iron block) is installed at the rear of the forklift (under the operator cabin). This counterweight must be heavy enough to balance the load lifted at the front and prevent the forklift from tipping forward. This is why counterbalance forklifts are usually much larger and heavier than the loads they lift.

Battery checks are important to ensure your machine continues to run smoothly, our top tips are:

1. Charge the battery correctly
It can be tempting to charge a battery whenever it is convenient, but the fact is that in order to properly maintain a forklift battery, it should only be charged at certain times and to certain degrees. Additionally, over or undercharging this type of battery can significantly decrease its lifespan.

2. Equalise Batteries Regularly
Flooded or wet cell batteries should be equalised on a regular basis.
Equalising rebalances the electrolyte concentration and also helps to remove sulphate crystals from the battery plates.

3. Regular Inspection and Cleaning
Look for wear, corrosion, loose connections or damaged cables. Cleaning the battery terminals is also crucial for optimal electrical conductivity. A visual inspection and cleaning routine will help identify potential issues and keep your battery in shape.

4. Check water and fluid levels
Forklift batteries need to have the right amount of water to work at optimum capacity. Approximately every five charge cycles, be sure to check the forklift battery fluid levels by opening up the battery.

5. Keep batteries at a safe temperature
Forklifts can be used in extreme environments, so it is essential to consider the ambient temperature for the battery when in use.
