Thefts from DIY stores and thefts of plant from sites remain a huge problem across the country. This is why it was great to call up to Wickes in Northampton to be part of their Community Day. Supported by DeterTech, providers of highly innovative, intelligence led security solutions, it's great to see Wickes shining a spotlight on security. Fix radio were broadcasting live from the store with Clive Holland in the driving seat.

If things get reported, things get done. We are aware that there is cynicism amongst some that "nothing gets done" which in turn means nothing gets reported. Through DISC and our anti-social behaviour reporting schemes, we make it easy to report retail crime and ASB, which in turn means action is then taken by the Neighbourhood Policing Teams and other authorities.

A 51-year-old man has been issued with a two-year criminal behaviour order (CBO) following persistent anti-social behaviour and begging in Corby town centre.

The order was granted by Northampton Magistrates’ Court on May 7, following a successful application by Northamptonshire Police.

Mark Weems, of Dorking Walk, Corby, was made subject of the order following complaints to the Corby Neighbourhood Policing Team about his aggressive behaviour when begging.

This behaviour included becoming aggressive and intimidating towards members of the public who declined to give him money as well as loitering around cash machines waiting for some of the most vulnerable members of the community to use them.

He also became verbally abusive when asked to move away from businesses and retailers, which caused further distress and alarm to those visiting and working in the town centre area.

This criminal behaviour order states Weems must not:

• Enter Corby town centre and Willow Place Shopping Centre where he has already been given a banning notice from
• Approach persons and ask for money (including food, money or material goods) in any street, road, public place or place to which the public have access to within Northamptonshire
• Enter any premises which he is banned or excluded from within Northamptonshire
• Remain on any premises when asked to leave by a member of staff or persons with authority to make such request within Northamptonshire.

If Weems fails to comply with the Criminal Behaviour Order, he risks being arrested and prosecuted further.

Fantastic article in Northampton Chronicle last week about the great work done by the Retail Crime Team in partnership with ourselves. We are lucky in Northants to have such a strong relationship with Northamptonshire Police and Northamptonshire OPFCC and are the envy of many. Without doubt, this relationship has led directly the such strong and ever improving results.

We love recognising the outstanding work that our retailers do and here are another two examples of that. Elaine is a Corby "Superspotter" who has a fantastic reputation for identifying offenders and supporting Northamptonshire Police in the prosecution of offenders. She is also top of the class when communicating with other retailers in Corby using the Disc App Instant Messenger.
Over in Northampton, Paul, for many years has supported the NBCP with numerous and regular identifications of prolific and priority offenders and is always willing to provide quality evidence. The commitment of Elaine, Paul and others is what's making a difference in Northamptonshire and we are delighted to award them our both our "Certificate Of Excellence".
Tesco should be very proud of them both.

If you had something more important to do (!) and missed last night's One Show, please see the attached link.
There is a feature at the beginning about how we are tackling retail crime in the county and the partnership working between retailers, @ Northamptonshire Police and the NBCP.
We have attracted a lot of media interest lately which suggests we must be doing something right!

Alex Jones and Lauren Laverne are joined by two stars from the world of rock and roll - punk icon Billy Idol and presenter Penny Lancaster.

We are delighted to welcome the Safer Business Network to the partnership. Their work, identifying travelling criminals, will dovetail perfectly in to what we already have to offer. This will considerably strengthen our position in striving to make Northamptonshire a no-go area for thieves, continue to increase public confidence and make Northamptonshire a safer place to shop and work.

We are fortunate in Northamptonshire to receive the support of the magistrates who have issued an appropriate sentence in this case. Dyirakumunda's period in custody will hopefully allow him to get his life back on track and give the victim's some much deserved respite.

A 41-year-old shoplifter has been sent to jail for 56 weeks at Northampton Magistrates’ Court after he targeted the same shop multiple times despite being handed a suspended sentence for retail crime.

Tendai Dyirakumunda, of no fixed address, was given an 18-week sentence suspended for 12 months by magistrates on December 13, 2025, after pleading guilty to one count of theft from a shop.

Dyirakumunda received the suspended sentence and was ordered to pay £500 in compensation to HMV after admitting to stealing a quantity of vinyl records from the Princes Walk store in Northampton.

On Tuesday, February 10, Dyirakumunda was back before the same court, where he pleaded guilty to a further 19 thefts from shop charges, which included three offences within days of being handed a second chance by magistrates.

He targeted the M&S shop at the BP fuel station in Abington Avenue, Northampton, over two consecutive days – December 14 and 15 – when he stole alcohol and chocolates worth a total of £433.

However, most of his offending occurred at the One Stop Shop in the town’s Stanhope Road, where he struck 17 times between December 19 and January 31, when he stole more than £3,000 worth of alcohol and meat products.

Dyirakumunda was handed two-week custodial sentences for each of the 19 offences to run consecutively but, following the activation of his suspended sentence, he will serve a total of 56 weeks in prison. He was also ordered to pay £3,576.90 in compensation.

Neil Cowley of the Northamptonshire Business Crime Partnership said: “Tendai Dyirakumunda’s sentence reflects that he is a persistent thief. He has been given ample opportunity to change his ways and support to help him, but he has chosen to continue his criminal lifestyle.

“We are all victims of shop theft but in this case, to target one store is both financially critical but also demoralising and frustrating for the hard-working staff who shouldn’t have to put up with this type of abuse.”
