The approach to the Wain house, a recently completed new house on the Herefordshire border. Local clay tile cladding and simple traditional forms used to create a relaxed dialogue with the surrounding context.

It was great to be able to pay a flying visit to the Wain House yesterday. The garden still looking like its Summer - a sign of the times or just unusual weather?

It's not all smooth sailing!⁠
⁠
Most are now aware of the issues faced by the River Wye SAC (Special Area of Conservation) due to high levels of phosphate. The render shows part of an application submitted to Powys in 2021 and prior to the SAC issues coming to light. Mid way through the application Natural Resources Wales correctly placed restrictions upon development within the SAC catchment and the context of the application significantly altered.⁠

Whilst we were able to continue with some aspects of the project, some (such as the event venue shown here) were placed on hold.⁠
⁠
It's a good example of the tension between what's right for the environment and what's right for a rural economy. Hopefully, the River Wye will regain its health, and methods of removing excess phosphates from waste continue to evolve, however, much work still to be done.

We don't undertake to many commercial projects, but this is a photo of Beech Trees, a stables undertaken for the Mare and Foal Sanctuary in Devon.⁠

Larch cladding was used as cladding which will weather back to to a soft grey whilst the roof brings the collection of buildings together and provides an overall form appropriate to the areas wider landscape of farm buildings.

Testing oil finishes for Upper Tregodfa.⁠

The single piece to the left is freshly sanded and unfinished piece of oak acting as a control. We are aiming to achieve an untreated look by mixing increasing quantities of white oil into the standard oil to achieve the right tone.

A photo of the Wain House, a recently completed project in Herefordshire.

The house was conceived as a series of smaller structures that nestle into the site and reflect the surrounding landscape of isolated agricultural outbuildings, this is the master bedroom element.

Taking in Grade II Listed Llewelyn Cottage during a trip to the Y Lle Clef. Likely dating from 1573 this sub medieval house within the small village of Beddgelert is under the custodianship of the National Trust.⁠

The second photo is dated from the end of the 19th century.⁠
⁠
Because it operates as a shop it is possible to explore the inside which retains many of its early historical features. The village has a few gems, but this was my favourite.

After a lot of work (and a particularly hard planning process) it’s exciting to finally preparing for construction at Penoffa Farm. Cladding for the off grid structures is coming entirely from trees felled on site. Most have already been rough sawn to size and are in the process of drying., whilst some logs await processing.

A fantastic visit to Eisteddfods Y Lle Celf Exhibition this weekend, the icing on the cake was Pen y Common being awarded the Eisteddfod Gold Medal for Architecture 2023. The aim of the award is to raise the profile of architecture in Wales with buildings being selected for their value to Welsh culture.⁠
⁠
The Judges commented that whilst Pen y Common is not at first an obvious candidate the exceptional ex*****on, resourcefulness of the design and surprise of scale welcome the visitor and continues the agricultural feel of this modest rural settlement.⁠

Congratulations to the whole project team and .⁠
⁠
The four shortlisted buildings form part of the Arts pavilion exhibition at the Y Lle Celf which is open all week and well worth a visit, just be sure to take your wellies!⁠

Travelling to North Wales this weekend for the opening of Eisteddfods Y Lle Celf celebration of visual arts and architecture in Wales.⁠
⁠
Pen Y Common is one of the four shortlisted projects for the Gold medal so we shall be keeping our fingers crossed. The exhibition opens tomorrow and runs until the 12th August.⁠
