McGregor Structures

McGregor Structures McGregor Structures is a leading manufacturer of tensile fabric structures We deliver across Europe!

We manufacture and design reinforced PVC sheets and covers on site, where we have a team of engineers that specialise in fabric structures and PVC fabric manufacturing. We have developed bespoke buildings and products; from salt barns to aircraft hangars. Expertly understanding the nature of the material is vital to creating the best product possible. With guidance from the customer we are able to

design and create a bespoke product. Our design team uses the latest software to calculate and draw up the right design.

The McGregor Structures team recently completed one of our largest single-site Opus installations, twenty structures for United Utilities at Halewood in Widnes.

The application is sludge cake storage at a wastewater treatment works. Biosolids produced during the treatment process need to be protected from the elements before being taken to farms as fertiliser. Covered storage keeps moisture levels in the cake lower, improving product quality and reducing processing load on site. Integrated guttering across every structure means water is collected rather than hitting the ground, taking further pressure off the factory.

The project specs:
→ Each pod 12m wide, 24m long
→ Bespoke roof sheet length of 19.4m, beyond the standard 16m maximum
→ 12 structures installed at Halewood in four weeks
→ 20 structures across the full project

Andy McGregor, our Engineering Director, was on site for the final handover. He was asked what sets McGregor Structures apart on a project of this scale, he kept it simple:
"With McGregor Structures, it's always the quality that sets us apart from everyone else."

As United Utilities' storage requirements grow, additional pods can be dropped into the existing layout without changing what is already in place.

Most sites come to us needing weather cover above their containers, and a standard Shield does that job well.

For spaces that need to work harder, workshops, maintenance bays, welfare areas, or temperature-sensitive storage, the insulated roof option takes Shield into different territory. Same structure, same installation speed, same modularity and redeployability. What changes is the internal environment:
→ Thermal insulation reduces temperature variation and condensation
→ Translucent panels bring diffused natural daylight in without direct sun
→ The space becomes a genuinely usable working environment year-round

No other supplier in the container-mounted structure market offers this as an integrated option. It is something we developed ourselves, and it is built into the Shield system, available on 10m and 12m structures.

We have added an insulated roof option to Shield.

Same structure, same speed of installation. The difference is what happens inside. The space stays warmer and drier, with diffused natural daylight coming through the translucent panels. A covered bay becomes a space that works year-round.

No other supplier in the container-mounted structure market offers this as an integrated option.

Available on 10m and 12m Shield structures. We go into more detail on how it works in the next post.

September is the last realistic window to get site infrastructure in place before Q4 volume arrives.

Shield mounts directly to the ISO containers already on site, needs no groundworks, and is typically operational within 48 hours of delivery. Stock is held across our UK and European hubs and can be on site within days of an order being confirmed.

If covering part of your yard is on the list for Q4, speak to the McGregor Structures team this month.

With the bank holiday only a few days away, most logistics and distribution sites are already adjusting schedules to absorb the gap.

A shorter week compresses the same yard workload into less time. When storage is exposed or loading bays are uncovered, that pressure lands harder than usual and leaves less room to manage around it.

The good news is that most container yards already have what they need to fix it. Shield mounts directly to the ISO containers already on site, needs no groundworks, and is typically operational within 48 hours of delivery.

If covering part of your yard has been on the list, get in touch with the McGregor Structures team.

The 1st October deadline is only five weeks away.

From that date, every permitted waste receiving site in England and Wales must log every load received on DEFRA's Digital Waste Tracking Service. Paper Waste Transfer Notes are gone from that date, with no grace period for sites that are not yet compliant.

Most sites are working through the software side right now, getting registered and training weighbridge staff. The physical yard tends to come up later.

DEFRA's system gives regulators a live view of what is arriving at your site, in what condition, and how it is being handled. Sites with covered separation bays and dry, organised storage are well placed when that level of visibility comes in.

Most logistics sites calculate the cost of a cover by the unit price.

Replace a temporary cover every three to five years, and over 15 years, you have paid for the same square footage of the roof three times over. Each replacement brings removal costs, downtime while the yard is exposed, and in some cases an insurance excess if a failure caused damage along the way. A lot of facilities managers reach that third replacement before they hit the full number.

The more useful question before the next purchase order is what covering this part of the site will actually cost over 15 years, and what the most efficient route to get there looks like.

If that calculation is worth running before the next budget cycle, we are happy to talk it through.

James Kemball is a container service provider offering cargo handling, long-term storage, and logistics solutions to their clients. When their customers started asking for undercover storage, they went looking for something that would fit the operation and set them apart.

McGregor Structures built and installed a Shield Canopy tailored to their site.

Paul Mitchell, their Commercial Lead, explains what happened next.

"As soon as it was up, we were ready to put cargo in there."

The Shield Canopy was installed and operational the same day

Since installation, the interest has spread further than they anticipated, with existing customers, new customers, and even competitors taking notice.

"Even our competition have shown an interest."

PJ Skips needed to cover separation bays without stopping the site.

Harriet Hamer, their Operations Director, had worked with McGregor Structures before. When the requirement came up to cover their existing concrete block bays and meet Environment Agency specifications, she gave us a call.

Opus connected to the Legato blocks already in place, no groundworks were required, and the installation was complete in two days with the site still running throughout. The results were immediate, less manual handling, lower transport costs from drier processed material, and more usable space across the site.

Harriet summed it up:
"The site management has improved enormously with the Opus structure, it enables us to maximise the space on site. It's provided us with the best possible ROI in the shortest period of time. We're super happy with the service provided by McGregor Structures."

RWM Expo is one month away, and it is returning to the NEC Birmingham on 16-17 September.

It is the UK's biggest event for the recycling and waste management sector. This year, it lands just weeks before the Digital Waste Tracking deadline in October, which means the conversations happening will be more operational than usual. Sites are thinking about what needs to be in order before the deadline hits.

Alasdair McGregor, our founder, will be there. If you are attending and want to talk through site infrastructure or how Opus works on recycling and waste transfer sites, get in touch before the event.
