Being able to operate powered access equipment is only part of the job.

Operators also need to understand the equipment they're using, the environment around them and the safe working practices required before work begins.

That’s why operator training needs to go beyond simply moving the machine from A to B.

Browns offers IPAF 3a & 3b training for people using scissor lifts and boom lifts as part of their work.

One job becomes two. Two becomes five.

For tradespeople, a ladder isn't something that comes out of the shed every few months. It's part of the working day.

That means durability, suitability and choosing the right type of access equipment matter much more when it is being used regularly.

We stock stepladders, extension ladders, combination ladders and specialist access equipment for a wide range of trades and tasks.

If you need help choosing something suitable for the way you work, take a look online or speak to the Browns team.

Working at height can be part of plenty of everyday jobs, whether somebody is using a ladder, steps, access equipment or working somewhere else where a fall could cause injury.

That’s why working at height training isn’t just for specialist roles. It’s about understanding when a task creates a fall risk, how that work should be planned, and what equipment and precautions are appropriate before someone starts.

Browns’ Working at Height Training is designed to give employees and those responsible for managing this type of work a clearer understanding of those risks and responsibilities.

Overreaching might save a few seconds, but it can quickly put you off balance and increase the risk of a fall.

Keep your body centred between the ladder's stiles and move the ladder whenever you can't comfortably reach the area you're working on.

A few extra seconds to reposition could prevent an accident.

Abrasive wheels are the kind of equipment people can become very comfortable with very quickly.

That’s where bad habits can creep in.

Using the wrong wheel for the job, applying too much pressure, ignoring vibration, working through excessive dust, or changing a wheel without properly isolating the equipment can all become normalised if nobody ever challenges the way the task is being done.

Browns’ Abrasive Wheels Awareness Training is aimed at exactly that gap: making sure operators and supervisors understand the risks around the equipment, not just how to make it work.

The course covers wheel selection, changing and mounting, cutting technique, dust, noise, vibration and safe isolation.

For teams using grinders, disc cutters or cut-off saws regularly, it’s a practical way to reset the basics and make sure everyone is working from the same standard.

A stepladder might be ideal for everyday jobs, while an extension or combination ladder can give you more reach or flexibility when the work changes from one task to the next.

And where there is a risk of contact with electrical hazards, fibreglass ladders may be the more appropriate choice.

The important thing is matching the equipment to the job, rather than making one ladder do everything.

Working above a staircase creates an obvious access problem: you’re trying to create a stable working platform where the floor level changes underneath you.

That affects how the tower is assembled, positioned and used, and it’s not something that should be improvised on site.

Browns’ PASMA Towers for Stairs training is for people who need to use mobile access towers safely in staircase environments, giving them the knowledge to approach that setup properly rather than adapting a standard solution and hoping it works.

The right ladder depends on more than how high you need to reach.

Think about where you’ll be working, how often the equipment will be used, whether you need to move between different tasks and what you’ll actually be doing once you’re at height.

A compact stepladder, an extension ladder, a combination ladder or a fibreglass option may all suit very different jobs.

If you’re not sure what fits the work you’re doing, get in touch or pop into the shop and we’ll help you narrow it down.

A quick look over a ladder and a proper inspection aren’t the same thing.

Someone responsible for inspecting workplace access equipment needs to be able to recognise faults, record what they find and decide what action should be taken when something isn’t right.

Our Ladders & Step Ladders Inspection Course is designed for people taking responsibility for those inspections.

Attendees learn how to assess ladders and stepladders, identify faults, record findings and recommend appropriate action, alongside the standards and guidance affecting their use.

Training is available at workplaces across the UK for groups of up to 10 delegates, with certification valid for three years following successful completion.

If ladder inspections form part of somebody’s role in your business, talk to Browns about the right training.
