2012 BMW 116d Sport (N47D20C) in with us for our same day timing chain replacement service.

Engine removed from the vehicle and a complete genuine BMW timing chain system fitted.

While carrying out the job we found the crankshaft pulley and clutch were both at the end of their life. We keep the common parts for these cars in stock, so the customer opted to get them replaced while everything was already apart, with no waiting around for parts.

2014 BMW 330d M Sport Touring (N57D30A) in with us for our same day timing chain replacement service, along with an oil filter housing gasket replacement.

Engine removed from the vehicle and a complete OEM IWIS timing chain kit fitted.

While carrying out the work we also noticed the coolant fl**ge pipe had started seeping. Luckily we keep these in stock, so a new genuine BMW fl**ge was fitted while the car was already with us.

Everything built back up, engine refitted and road tested, running spot on.

2014 BMW 330d M Sport (N57D30A) recovered into us after the timing chain had snapped.

Once stripped down we found the camshaft chain had snapped, causing damage to the top end and valve train. All damaged components were replaced using genuine BMW parts, and after carrying out all our usual checks and tests, everything passed as it should.

With the engine already removed from the vehicle, the customer sensibly opted to have the bottom end refreshed at the same time. With the amount of N57 bottom end failures we’re seeing at the moment, it made perfect sense to get it done while the engine was already out.

• Complete genuine BMW timing chain system
• All damaged valve train components replaced
• Bottom end refresh
• OEM Kolbenschmidt main and big end bearings
• New genuine BMW rocker cover
• Genuine BMW oil and filter
• Coolant refresh
• A/C re-gas
• 2 year unlimited mileage warranty

The rocker cover was also warped, which is extremely common on these N57 engines, so that was replaced with a new genuine BMW cover.

We only fit genuine BMW rocker covers to these. We’ve tried and seen enough aftermarket ones over the years to know they either leak straight away or don’t last. It’s simply not worth doing the job twice.

Everything built back up, engine refitted and thoroughly tested.

It arrived with us on a recovery truck with a snapped timing chain and left under its own power, running perfectly.

2018 BMW 435d xDrive M Sport (N57D30B) in with us all the way from Belfast. The customer travelled over on the ferry to have the work carried out by us.

This one came in for the full preventative treatment. Timing chains, bottom end refresh and a walnut blasting session while we had it.

These twin-turbo N57D30B engines are incredibly common for bottom end failure, so getting the bearings and oil pump done before they fail can save a huge repair bill further down the line.

• OEM Kolbenschmidt main and big end bearings
• New genuine BMW rocker cover
• Walnut blasting of the intake ports and valves
• Genuine BMW oil and filter
• Coolant refresh

• 2 year unlimited mileage warranty

The original rocker cover had also warped, so that was replaced with a new genuine BMW unit while everything was apart.

The walnut blasting made a massive difference. Years of carbon build-up removed from the intake ports and around the valves, getting them properly cleaned out and allowing the engine to breathe as it should again.

It’s always great when customers are prepared to travel for us, but coming over on the ferry from Belfast is some commitment! Really appreciate the trust in us to get the job done properly.

2015 BMW 320d Sport (N47D20C) in with us for our same day timing chain replacement service.

Engine removed from the vehicle and a complete OEM IWIS timing chain kit fitted.

While carrying out the job we found a few other issues that needed addressing. The turbocharger was at the end of its life, the clutch and dual mass flywheel were both worn out, and the rocker cover had warped and was leaking oil.

Luckily, we keep all of these parts in stock, so there was no waiting around or having to book the car back in another day.

• New OEM LuK dual mass flywheel

2014 BMW 640d M Sport (N57D30B) in with us for a preventative timing chain replacement and the all-important bottom end refresh.

These twin-turbo N57D30B engines are becoming incredibly common for bottom end failure. We’re absolutely inundated with failed ones at the moment, with a yard full waiting to be rebuilt. We genuinely can’t get through them quick enough.

This customer chose the sensible route and got the work done before it failed. Once they start knocking and spin a bearing, you’re potentially looking at crankshaft and block damage and a repair bill more than double the cost of doing the preventative work.

Engine removed from the vehicle, stripped down and the bottom end checked before being rebuilt with the parts we know and trust.

We do these jobs day in, day out. There’s no cutting corners and no cheap parts. We’ve seen far too many N57s come through the door after previous repairs where corners have been cut, and it only leads to one thing… premature failure and another much bigger bill.

Do the timing chains and bottom end before they fail, then look after it properly afterwards with sensible oil and filter intervals. That’s the best way to give these engines the longest possible life.

This 640d was caught at the right time, rebuilt with the right parts and is now ready for plenty more miles.

Preventative maintenance is considerably cheaper than an engine rebuild! 👌🔧

2014 BMW 320d M Sport xDrive in with us for a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission service.

These ZF 8HP gearboxes are brilliant transmissions, but like anything mechanical, they still need maintaining. The oil is subjected to heat, friction and contamination over thousands of miles, and leaving the original fluid in indefinitely isn’t something we recommend.

ZF recommends servicing these transmissions around every 60,000 miles, and we’d advise doing them sooner on vehicles that are regularly driven hard, used for towing or subjected to heavier use.

🔧 Our ZF 8HP service includes:

• Genuine ZF sump with integrated transmission filter
• Genuine ZF fitting kit
• Genuine ZF Lifeguard 8 transmission oil
• Correct filling procedure and fluid level set at the specified temperature
• Full road test after completion

Regular servicing helps keep gear changes smooth, removes contaminated old fluid and gives the internal clutches, valve body, bearings and other components the best chance of a long service life.

We only use genuine ZF parts and ZF Lifeguard 8 oil on these transmissions. There are cheaper aftermarket service kits and alternative oils available, but it’s simply not somewhere we believe in cutting corners.

If your BMW is approaching 60,000 miles and has never had the gearbox serviced, or you’ve bought the car and have no record of it ever being done, it’s definitely worth getting it booked in.
