2013 BMW 330d M Sport (N57) back in with us for a major service, having previously had its timing chains and bottom end refreshed with us earlier this year.

Always nice to see a returning customer, especially with a car that’s clearly being well looked after!

🔧 Work carried out:

• Engine oil service using genuine BMW TwinPower Turbo oil
• New oil filter
• New engine air filter
• New cabin pollen filter
• New diesel fuel filter

As you can see from the photos, the air and pollen filters were definitely ready for changing! Just goes to show how much dirt and debris these filters collect over time.

As always, the service data was recorded to all three locations, the vehicle’s iDrive, key and BMW central service history server, using our genuine BMW tooling and official BMW portal.

It’s a lovely example of a 330d, and great to see an owner who clearly takes pride in looking after it.

With the timing chains and bottom end already taken care of, and now a fresh major service, it’s ready for plenty more miles. 👌

2017 BMW X1 xDrive20d M Sport Auto, another non-runner purchased through our website!

This X1 had suffered a turbocharger failure, which resulted in the engine running on uncontrollably and ultimately causing serious engine damage.

The customer had the vehicle recovered to BMW, where they were quoted an eye-watering amount for a replacement engine.

Rather than spend that sort of money repairing it, they contacted us through our online Sell My BMW tool to see what we’d offer for the car as it stood.

We agreed a fair price, arranged free recovery directly from BMW, and purchased the vehicle without any hassle for the customer.

Once back at our workshop, we got to work getting it back on the road.

2020 BMW 318d M Sport MHEV (B47D20B) in with us to investigate an engine management light.

After carrying out diagnostics, we traced the fault to a failed diesel particulate matter (PM) sensor in the exhaust system.

These are becoming a very common failure on the BMW B47 and B57 diesel engines. We’ve replaced a fair few of them recently!

For anyone wondering what they do, the particulate matter sensor monitors soot particles in the exhaust gases after the DPF (diesel particulate filter). It helps the engine management system detect if excessive soot is passing through the filter, which could indicate a problem with the DPF itself.

When the sensor fails, it can trigger the engine management light even when the DPF is working perfectly fine.

🔧 Work carried out:

• Fault diagnosed and particulate matter sensor replaced
• Engine oil service using genuine BMW oil and filter
• Fault codes cleared and vehicle checked

As always, the service history was updated on the vehicle’s iDrive, key and BMW central service history server, using our genuine BMW diagnostic equipment and official BMW portal.

No unnecessary parts thrown at it, just a proper diagnosis and repair. Back on the road with the warning light resolved! 👌

2014 BMW X3 xDrive30d M Sport (N57) in with us for some preventative maintenance, including timing chain replacement, bottom end refresh and walnut blasting.

Another N57 getting some attention before any of the common problems turn into expensive engine damage!

🔧 Work carried out:

• Complete genuine BMW timing chain system
• New OEM Kolbenschmidt main and big end bearings
• Brand new genuine BMW oil pump
• Walnut blasting of the inlet ports and valves to remove carbon deposits

The walnut blasting made a massive difference, as you can see from the before and after photos!

Over time, carbon builds up around the inlet valves and ports on these engines, restricting airflow and potentially affecting performance and efficiency. Walnut blasting removes those deposits without damaging the metal underneath.

With the timing chains, bearings and oil pump replaced, and the inlet ports cleaned out, this X3 has had some important maintenance taken care of.

All completed as part of our next working day service! 👌

2025 BMW 220i M Sport (B48) recovered into us after hitting something in the road and completely losing drive!

A quick inspection revealed the cause. The vehicle had struck some sort of debris in the road, punching a hole straight through the gearbox sump and allowing all the transmission oil to escape.

Not something we see every day, especially on a car this new!

Thankfully, we were able to get it sorted without needing a replacement gearbox.

🔧 Work carried out:

• Damaged gearbox sump removed
• New genuine ZF integrated sump and filter fitted
• Genuine ZF Lifeguard 8 transmission oil
• Gearbox filled and oil level set following the correct ZF procedure and temperature requirements
• Vehicle tested and checked for leaks

The ZF 8-speed gearbox relies on the correct oil level and filling procedure, so it’s important this is carried out properly rather than simply filling it up and hoping for the best!

A potentially very expensive incident, but thankfully this one was caught in time!

All repaired, tested and back on the road, driving as it should. 👌

2014 BMW 520d M Sport (N47D20C) in with a knocking engine.

The customer had decided they didn’t want to spend the money repairing the car, so asked if we’d be interested in buying it as it stood, requiring engine work.

We agreed a fair price, arranged free recovery and paid the customer instantly on collection. Nice and straightforward!

Once back at our workshop, we got stuck into getting it back on the road.

🔧 Work carried out:

• Quality replacement engine supplied and fitted
• Complete new OEM IWIS timing chain system
• Associated gaskets, seals, oil and filter
• Engine refitted and tested

The car is now running lovely again and just needs a little pre-sale preparation and a fresh MOT before it’ll be advertised over on our vehicle sales page, Adc Vehicle Sales.

It’s a lovely spec too, with some great factory options including Head-Up Display and Harman Kardon audio.

With the replacement engine and new timing chains already taken care of, it should represent great value for money for its next owner!

2014 BMW M135i (N55) in with us for some routine servicing and maintenance.

Nothing major needed with this one, just keeping on top of the servicing and making sure everything is looked after properly.

• Engine oil and oil filter service
• New engine air filter

• ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox service using genuine ZF parts and Lifeguard transmission oil

The ZF gearbox service is something we always recommend keeping on top of, ideally around every 60,000 miles. Fresh oil and a new filter help protect the internals and keep everything operating smoothly.

2014 BMW X5 xDrive30d (N57D30A) in with us for a timing chain replacement, bottom end refresh and ZF gearbox service.

This X5 had previously had a cheap aftermarket timing chain kit fitted elsewhere, something we’re unfortunately seeing far too often.

These cheaper kits simply don’t seem to last. We’ve seen plenty of them fall to pieces in a relatively short space of time, sometimes resulting in snapped chains and serious engine damage.

The customer definitely made the right decision getting it replaced with a genuine BMW kit before it became a much more expensive problem!

🔧 Work carried out:

✅ Complete genuine BMW timing chain system
✅ New OEM Kolbenschmidt main and big end bearings
✅ Brand new genuine BMW oil pump
✅ Genuine BMW gaskets, seals, oil and filter
✅ Coolant refresh and A/C re-gas
✅ ZF 8-speed gearbox service using genuine ZF filter and Lifeguard 8 oil

With the number of failed N57 engines we deal with, we’re big believers in getting the timing chains and bottom end refreshed before something goes wrong.

2013 BMW 120d M Sport Automatic (N47D20C) recovered into us with a rather unusual engine fault!

The engine would start and run, but very poorly, before eventually cutting out.

The car had previously undergone a timing chain replacement elsewhere, so we started investigating to find out exactly what was going on.

After carrying out some checks, we discovered cylinder 4 had no compression whatsoever.

With the engine removed from the vehicle and stripped, we eventually found the culprit. A snapped exhaust valve spring on cylinder 4!

Not something we come across every day on these engines, but it certainly explained the symptoms.

🔧 Work carried out:

• Engine removed and stripped
• Failed exhaust valve spring identified
• All damaged components replaced
• Cylinder head and associated components checked and tested
• Complete OEM IWIS timing chain system fitted
• 2 new rear shock absorbers
• Steering rack repair kit fitted
• Associated gaskets, seals, oil and filter

Thankfully, all our usual engine checks and tests passed, meaning we could get everything repaired and back together without needing a replacement engine.

With the engine repairs completed, we also sorted a couple of other issues with the rear shock absorbers and steering rack.

Another N47D20C saved and back on the road, now happily reunited with its owner down in sunny Cornwall! ☀️

Always nice getting to the bottom of a fault that’s a little different from the usual timing chain failures we see!

2013 BMW 330d xDrive M Sport (N57D30A) recovered into us following a high pressure fuel pump failure.

These Bosch CP4 fuel pumps are a fairly common failure point on the N57, and we’ve replaced plenty of them over the years.

Unfortunately, when they fail internally, they send metal swarf throughout the entire fuel system, contaminating the injectors, fuel rail and lines. It’s never a case of simply replacing the pump and carrying on!

The customer also decided to have the timing chains and bottom end refreshed at the same time. A sensible decision, as with the engine removed for this work, a good chunk of the labour involved in the fuel system repairs is saved.

🔧 Work carried out:

• Complete OEM IWIS timing chain system
• New OEM Kolbenschmidt main and big end bearings
• New genuine BMW oil pump
• Replacement high pressure fuel pump
• 6 replacement fuel injectors
• Replacement fuel rail with pressure sensor and regulator
• Fuel lines removed and thoroughly cleaned
• Associated gaskets, seals, oil and filter

A fair amount of work involved with this one, but unfortunately once a CP4 pump starts sending metal through the system, there’s no cutting corners. Any contamination left behind risks damaging the replacement components.

With the fuel system repaired, timing chains replaced and bottom end refreshed, this 330d has had a substantial amount of preventative work done alongside the original repair.

All back together, running perfectly and back on the road! 👌
