A common issue we see in the workshop is worn or missing throttle pedal bushes, along with bent throttle stops.

These problems can leave your throttle feeling loose and unresponsive, impacting overall driving performance.

To resolve these issues we:
- Straighten and reinforce the throttle stop with a welded bracket to prevent future bending
- Install high-quality SuperPro pedal bushes (SPF0982) for a tighter, more precise feel

Our seats are still a popular upgrade for TRs. They provide comfort and security, whilst being as wide as possible given the cabin size of a TR. Standard pricing is for a black seat with white or black piping. Alternative seat and piping colours are available at an additional cost. (Part number RTR6125)

These seats pair perfectly with a roll over bar, harness bar, and harnesses (part numbers RTR9053, RTR9148HB, and RTR9249). The harness bar can also be used individually with a set of harnesses, if preferred.

Neil & Sue are taking on the Balkans Rally!! 🚙

Next week, Neil & Sue are setting off for a month long rally in the Works TR4 Rally car registered 6VC 👌🏽

They will be taking part in Malcolm McKays Balkans Rally, run under the banner of Classic Rally Press Ltd, here’s the map 🗺️ extract that gives some idea of some of the places they will be visiting

This is a return visit for 6VC to this area as the car, which was part of the works Competition Department from early 1962, was part of the works team that campaigned the 1963 Liege-Sofia-Liege.

The event was a grueling affair with most of the field falling by the wayside.

Only a handful of cars reached the finish none of which were from the works team.

6VC was a high-speed support car, not competing as such but very much present.

One of the most commonly fitted upgrades in our workshop is the Axial fuel pump kit (part number RTR4050XK), along with our fuel pressure regulator kit (part number RTR4456K). This week alone, we have installed three of these kits.

We are frequently removing both standard and aftermarket systems that have proven to be substandard. In contrast, our pump kits have demonstrated outstanding reliability since we first devisedthe system back in 1987.

When installing the fuel pump kit, we always recommend pairing it with our auxiliary fuse box kit (part number RTR8270K). In addition, we always wire in a relay for the fuel pump. This is essential, as modern pump systems require around 13 amps, compared to just 3 amps for the original setup. This is a commonly overlooked detail when installing aftermarket pump kits.

Sometimes in the workshop we are presented with cars that require special work to achieve the customer's requirements, this can include manufacturing something bespoke. This particular car came in for a fuel smell in the boot issue, after an inspection we found the pump lines were of a type that would allow fuel to permeate through the hose wall. We also found that the body was sandwiched in between the plates for the fuel filler cap with little chance of a gas tight seal. This would be contributing to the fuel smell in the boot issue. After a discussion with the customer, they opted for the full RTR fuel system including one of our high-capacity aluminium fuel tanks (part number 312359XALK) and for us to fit an original new old stock Leyland lockable filler cap ( part number 571086 ).
Due to the holes in the body where the old filler cap was mounted it was necessary to make an adapter plate utilising the original screw fastening holes with a suitable hole in the middle to accommodate the lockable filler cap and seal. The majority of the manufacturing for this part was done on our period lathe which fits in well in our workshop being a COLCHESTER model TRIUMPH 2000.
 
This part of the work on the car is now complete, and the customer is very pleased: 'The filler cap looks excellent'

We very often come across poorly performing aftermarket throttle linkage kits. In this instance, the customer may well have struggled to fit and adjust the choke mechanism as we found the cable lying across the inlet manifolds. When the throttle pedal was depressed fully to the floor, the throttles were only opening to around 50% — significantly restricting engine performance. The throttle push rods on this style of kit are also difficult to adjust compared to an overhead system.

After discussing the issues with the customer, he was happy for us to install one of our overhead throttle linkage kits, part number RTR4211K (picture 2). Our throttle system has proven itself to be a major contributor to smooth running and maintainability of the Lucas mechanical petrol injection system. By relocating the mechanism above the throttle bodies, heat is kept away from the linkage while access for adjustment is greatly improved. The overhead arrangement also frees up valuable space below, allowing fitment of a high gas-flow exhaust system.

This head has been prepared for one of our 6 cylinder engines we are currently assembling in the workshop.
Note it has our renowned red anodised alloy valve caps (part number RTR1180). These are made from very high aircraft grade aluminium, precision machined to exact dimensions and tolerances to ensure correct valve, collet and spring location. They are anodised red to the highest grade to ensure long life in operation.

In the workshop, we currently have a couple of engine builds underway. This customer had recently purchased the car, but the engine was not meeting his needs. After discussions with the customer, we are rebuilding the engine to create a fast road specification that better suits his requirements.

This build will be very similar to the engine in Neil’s Targa TR5 — a proven specification that has become extremely popular with our customers.

The blue TR5 (the Targa TR5 as we know it), which Neil has campaigned for over 20 years, was originally built to take part in the Australian Targa Tasmania stage rally. The engine was relatively standard due to the constraints of the regulations, but it did feature our rally camshaft. This camshaft, in the right engine, delivers excellent torque and power in the region of 175 BHP.

In this guise, with an all-steel body, the car has completed hundreds of thousands of miles in rallies, races, and pleasure trips. It has won numerous road rallies in Europe, its classic category in Targa Tasmania, the King of the Carnival Rally in Barbados, and races at the Mdina GP in Malta. Throughout this entire period, the engine was never opened.

At a track day in 2025, a naughty son-in-law changed down a gear when the revs were too high, taking the top off a piston. An engine rebuild was required. This has now been completed, and the engine is currently going back in. We’ll see what the power and torque figures look like once it’s run in.
