No drawing? Not a problem.

Some parts arrive at PSR as complete technical drawings and STEP files.

Others arrive as a photo of something worn, a rough sketch, or an old component accompanied by: “Can you make another one of these?”

Both are perfectly reasonable places to start.

If there’s enough information to quote accurately, we’ll quote it. If there isn’t, we’ll tell you what we need next, whether that’s a measurement, a little application detail or the physical part itself.

Engineering doesn’t always begin with a beautifully finished CAD file.

Sometimes it begins with a slightly battered piece of plastic on someone’s desk.

You can’t see static building up.

Unfortunately, sensitive electronics can.

In semiconductor and electronics environments, the electrical behaviour of a plastic can matter just as much as its dimensions or mechanical properties.

That’s why specialist grades exist.

PSR works with antistatic and electrically conductive POM-C options designed for applications where uncontrolled electrostatic charge can become a problem.

Same basic family of engineering plastic.

Very different behaviour.

It’s a useful reminder that specifying “acetal” can sometimes be only the beginning of the specification.

Where capacity allows, we’ll move quickly and help find the most practical route forward.

But there’s another part of that service we think matters just as much.

If we can do it, we’ll tell you.

If we need more information, we’ll ask.

And if the deadline isn’t realistic, we’d rather say so now.

When your schedule is already under pressure, the last thing you need is another supplier telling you what you want to hear.

Sometimes machining the parts is the easy bit.

Then someone has to source the additional components.

Someone has to organise them.

Someone has to assemble everything.

And eventually, someone has to work out why component B doesn’t quite fit component A.

PSR can handle fabricated assemblies, subassemblies, component procurement and assembly alongside our machining work.

That means fewer handovers, fewer suppliers to coordinate and less internal resource spent getting everything over the finish line.

Not every customer needs us to do all of it.

But when they do, having one team responsible for more of the job can make life considerably simpler.

A prototype that finds a problem has done its job.

It might not feel that way at first.

But discovering that a component doesn’t fit quite as expected, the material isn’t behaving as intended or a design detail needs changing is considerably easier before production begins.

That’s why PSR offers prototype and sample machining alongside production work.

It gives customers an opportunity to check fit, function, material compatibility and the manufacturing approach while changes are still relatively straightforward.

Finding a problem in prototype number one can be frustrating.

Finding it after part number 500 is considerably more so.

“Food grade” answers one question.

A production line asks several more.

How is the component cleaned?

What chemicals will it encounter?

What does it run against?

How quickly does it move?

How much wear will it see?

Does friction matter?

PSR works with food-contact options across materials including POM-C, polyethylene, PET and specialist nylon grades.

Compliance is important, but selecting a material for food and packaging machinery doesn’t stop there.

The component still has to survive everything a working production environment throws at it.

Because being suitable for food contact isn’t much comfort if the part wears out every few weeks.

Clear plastic has a surprisingly serious job.

Polycarbonate gives you visibility, but that’s only part of what makes it useful.

It also offers excellent impact strength, dimensional stability and good machinability.

That combination makes it useful for machine guards, sight glasses and applications where operators need to see what’s happening without getting anywhere near what’s happening.

Sometimes transparency is simply convenient.

On machinery, it can help with safety, inspection and spotting problems sooner.

PSR machines polycarbonate components where seeing through the material is only half the requirement.

The other half is trusting what’s between you and the machine.

Sometimes the best thing we can do with your drawing is question it.

Material specified. Dimensions set. Tolerances defined.

Easy. Machine it.

Usually.

But occasionally something deserves another look.

A tolerance might be unnecessarily tight. A material might not suit the working environment. A particular feature might create problems during machining or in use.

After more than 30 years working with engineering plastics, PSR knows that pressing ahead isn’t always the quickest route forward.

If something looks worth checking, we’ll flag it before machining.

A short conversation at the beginning is usually preferable to a much longer one after the parts have been made.

Nylon or POM-C?

Add water to the conversation and things get interesting.

Nylon is strong, tough and highly wear resistant, but it absorbs more moisture.

POM-C has very low moisture absorption and excellent dimensional stability.

So when a component needs to maintain its dimensions around water, humidity or regular washdown, that difference can become important.

Does that make POM-C better than nylon?

No.

It makes it better suited to some jobs.

That distinction sits at the heart of how PSR approaches material selection. We look at where the component runs, what it touches and what it actually needs to withstand.

A datasheet gives you properties.

The application tells you which ones matter.

Spare a thought for the humble wear strip.

It isn’t particularly glamorous.

It probably won’t feature prominently in the photos when a new production line is commissioned.

But get the material, dimensions or running surface wrong and everyone suddenly knows exactly where it is.

Wear strips and guides can spend thousands of hours running against chains, belts, products and other components.

That means friction, speed, load and wear all need considering for something that, on a drawing, might look remarkably simple.

PSR machines these components regularly for conveyors and materials-handling systems.

Sometimes the least exciting component on the machine has one of the most important jobs.
