Nearly a month ago now, I loaded a few pallets with most of the spare parts I had collected over the years, along with my fork truck, and sent the lot to auction. Now semi-retired, I will concentrate on testing and repairing moist grain silos, such as Boythorpe, A O Smith, Harvestore and Simplex, as I seem to be the only person in the country interested in these. I will also continue inspecting above ground slurry stores, and carrying out minor repairs to them. Many larger estates and insurers like the reassurance of a written report into the condition of their stores, and of course I am happy to do this.

Got called out to a bit of an emergency yesterday. This old slurry store was leaking, having corroded in from the edge of the sheet, reaching the point where there is no overlap. A stainless steel patch, drilled for the bolt pitch, cranked so it covers the overlap closely, combined with a mastic which expands as it gets wet, and finally pulled close with stainless self drilling screws, should last another few years.
Ideally, patches should be on the inside to stop corrosion spreading.

One of the problems users of moist grain towers face is wear of the filler pipes and swan neck. It is impossible to find used ones worth the trouble of fitting, so I have found a different source of similar size galvanised pipes. Quite thick so they should last a good while longer than the originals!
I just fitted a replacement set in Cumbria. At the same time I extended the fixed ladder down by one section and provided an old portable ladder.
Although it was cold on the fingers, it is always a pleasure to have a customer plan this work in advance instead of waiting until I am too busy preparing for harvest.

I am desperately trying to empty my workshop of some of the parts collected over the past 40 years. More bits not listed, so please ask; open to offers, even silly ones, so give me a call!

Been a bit cold this week on my fingers. I inspected this old Malgar slurry store a few months ago. There was a bit of corrosion near a few bolt holes in the vertical seams in the bottom ring, which the farmer treated as I recommended. Just in case this corrosion had weakened the seam , I fitted tensioned wire ropes at the points I had noted were most likely to be weak. If you zoom in it is possible to see the wire ropes and bottle screws I used to tension them.

Up to the borders to patch a gash in a slurry store and replace bearings and seals in two mixers.
The store still had about 5’ of slurry in, so it would be extremely difficult to patch on the inside, and impossible to repair the mixers without causing a major pollution incident.
I put the patch on the outside, which is not very good, because the damaged area is still exposed to slurry, and left the bearings and modified seals with explicit instructions as to how to fit them. A bit of grease might have helped prolong the life of the seals and bearings!
A 500 mile round trip and very little work completed.

Busy recently inspecting slurry stores and testing and repairing moist grain silos. First picture is a typical point in a slurry stores that looks OK outside, but inside shows a bit of attention will be needed soon.
Second is an A O Smith silo, must be over 50 years old. The nuts and bolts used on these were plated rather than galvanised, and so corroded badly , staining the sides of the silo. The corrosion is of course accelerated a bit because it is near the sea. The Lake District fells in the background.
