Manufacturer and supplier of HIPPODAMS: mobile, water-filled cofferdams for temporary works and flood defence

The Barbican Water Gardens and lakes are known as a serene escape within London. Completely surrounded by the Brutalist architecture of the Barbican Estate, the Water Gardens feature a significant lake system over one hectare in size, integrating wildlife and nature within an urban environment through a system of waterfalls, weirs, and fountains.

The Gardens' water requires constant circulation to keep it oxygenated and healthy, to support the varied resident fauna and flora. The entire volume of water in the system is circulated every two days to ensure its vitality.

Earlier this week, Potamii assisted Fountaineers Ltd - who are currently tasked with repairing and maintaining the water pumps and filtration systems in the Gardens - by deploying a 25-metre HippoDam in a C-shape to isolate a submerged pump in need of repair. The HippoDam's unique characteristics enabled a barrier to be created, facilitating dewatering of the temporary work area and subsequently defending against water ingress. This provided clear access to the Fountaineers Ltd Team of pump engineers.

Earlier this week Potamii assisted Claret Civil Engineering, with a pair of to support the extensive activities underway for the Benacre & Kessingland Flood Management Project on the Suffolk Heritage Coast.

Working closely with Balfour Beatty, a key delivery partner for the Project, the are being sensitively deployed across the network of drainage ditches that crisscross the flood-risk area to facilitate the construction of temporary haulage roads across the valley.

We are particularly interested in the extensive efforts of stakeholders to mitigate the environmental and ecological impact of flood risk management. A critical part of the Project is the creation of approximately 82 hectares of intertidal habitat through inundation by tidal waters. This "rewilded" habitat will foster biodiversity, providing essential support for migratory birds, fish, and various invertebrates. Water vole habitats are being enhanced by improving approximately 4km of ditches and watercourses.

Potamii's HippoDams are playing a small yet significant role in achieving both the project's objectives and protecting conservation goals.

We are very proud to have contributed to Pip and Sarah's (.Grand.Grange) remarkable and challenging Bedfordshire barn renovation project, which recently garnered well-deserved recognition from .mccloud1 and Channel 4's . By deploying a 35-meter HippoDam barrier, Pip and Sarah were able to access the barn's foundations, which lay submerged beneath an adjacent pond, and undertake essential remedial work.

The deep-water dock in Portishead on the Severn Estuary was built in the 1860s, at the height of Britain’s iron and steel era. Originally accommodating large ships that had difficulty navigating up the Severn Estuary and reaching Bristol Harbour, these ships brought valuable cargoes from across the globe and exported local products overseas.

Throughout most of the 1900s, colliers (coal-carrying ships) were commonplace in Portishead Dock, feeding the two Portishead power stations with Welsh coal from Newport and Ely (now Penarth). By the early 1980s, the industrial activities in and around Portishead Dock had dwindled, and the Port of Bristol Authority finally closed the dock in 1992.

In 2000, work started on the construction of a new lock barrel at the entrance to Portishead Dock and Portishead Marina was opened in May 2001.

Potamii recently assisted Mechanical Services (Wessex) LLP - and their client boatfolk - to deploy their 15-metre across the floor of the lock to facilitate essential repairs to the lock’s Sea Gate and Marina Gate, both of which required isolation from the estuary waters. The local tidal range can reach as high as 14 metres, so the ’s capabilities were dwarfed by the massive stop logs that needed to be slotted into position at low tide... An exciting project to be involved in!

Malham Tarn, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, is one of England's highest lakes. At 377 metres (1,237 feet) above sea level, the heart-shaped glacial lake formed about 10,000 years ago at the end of the last Ice Age. It lies high above the majestic Malham Cove, near Malham village.

In the 19th Century, the lake and picturesque surroundings are thought to have inspired author Charles Kingsley to write 'The Water Babies' while staying at Malham Tarn House.

Fox Owmby Limited recently deployed a 20-metre to isolate the sluice gate (originally added to the lake in 1791 by Lord Ribblesdale) at the southern end of the tarn. This enabled and successfully facilitated the essential repairs that were urgently required.

The environmental credentials of both Fox Owmby Limited and Potamii were monitored and supported by the knowledgeable ecologists from JBA Consulting's Sustainability and Environment Department. (Malham Tarn is designated as part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC)). 🦛

Last week, Potamii was in The Cambridgeshire Fens working with Middle Level Commissioners to replace the w**d screen of a pumping station.

The Middle Level Commissioners, a statutory corporation, have been managing water levels in the vast network of watercourses within the Fens since 1862. The flat, fertile fenlands of East Anglia encompass nearly half of England’s most productive, Grade 1 agricultural land. The continuous operation of numerous pumping stations is primarily responsible for keeping this low-lying area dry, as they tirelessly move water through an extensive network of over 5,000 kilometres of man-made ditches and drainage channels.

By deploying a across the drainage channel adjacent to the pumping station, the maintenance team from Middle Level Commissioners was able to the approaches to the pumping station. This allowed access to the w**d screen, thus facilitating its removal and replacement.

Potamii's are widely used to hold back water in the UK's vast array of ditches, drains and d***s. With excellent profiling on uneven ground, they are a valuable asset for our Customers' teams, facilitating construction and engineering repairs, whilst defending against water ingress and protecting the workforce. The white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) is the UK's only native freshwater crayfish. It was once found across most of Great Britain. However, its distribution is rapidly shrinking, due to threats (a) to its habitat and (b) from the invasive, non-native signal crayfish, which is larger, more aggressive and also carries crayfish plague (a type of water mould) deadly to white-clawed crayfish.

The white-clawed crayfish are protected in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) and are listed as Endangered on the global IUCN Red List (International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species). Furthermore, it is illegal to handle these bronze-coloured little chaps without a licence from Natural England.

During a recent deployment in North Yorkshire, we were lucky enough to witness the recording of three healthy adult specimens and be able to assist the expert team of ecologists from JBA Consulting (all trained in crayfish identification, surveying, measurement, and in strict biosecurity measures) with the work to enhance the habitat of these crayfish.

Clearly, these guys didn't get the Christmas carol memo... Ten swans a-swimming below Uffington Bridge, near Stamford in Lincolnshire.

Stone Edge North Ltd has deployed a pair of to redirect the River Welland and progressively isolate the three piers of the late 17th Century, triple-spanned, limestone bridge.

Working with Balfour Beatty's ground engineers, and under the direction of Lincolnshire County Council's Highways department, the expert team of stone masons from Stone Edge North Ltd are undertaking complex repairs to extend the lifespan of the bridge, which connects the villages Uffington and Barnack.
