We spent yesterday at The Manchester College talking with students about 3D scanning, measurement, inspection and reverse engineering and giving them a chance to try our PMT Technologies GAMMA Arm with Scanner and 3devok scanners.

Thanks to the college for inviting us. It was great to see the students getting hands-on with the equipment and taking such an interest in metrology.

How do you measure the surface of Jodrell Bank’s 250-ft Lovell Telescope?

William Vyner-Brooks and Conrad Szyman took on that challenge during their summer internship at Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire, using a FARO Focus S350 laser scanner hired from Manchester Metrology.

We provided the scanner alongside introductory equipment and FARO SCENE software training for their four-week project.

Starting with the smaller Student Telescope, they worked their way up to the Mark II and then the Lovell Telescope. Some Lovell scans captured up to 400 million points, helping them investigate how the telescope’s bowl changes shape at different elevations.

These measurements are helping the observatory evaluate possible corrective measures, particularly for high-frequency X-band operation.
