When is a faulty wire not a faulty wire……..

This Disco 5 came in initially for a engine management light but when dropped in we were asked of we could also investigate the SOS warning on the dash and the radio intermittently not emitting sound.

The EML was a straight forwards job. The SOS was logging faults with the internal microphone and call button both being shorted to ground. These items are both up near the interior light and are common failures when a windshield has leaked, but this wasn’t the case. Going off the fault descriptions the manual suggested it was a wiring fault. It would also cause the intermittent radio failure as when the SOS system is in operation the infotainment system is muted. And as the car thought it was nearly continuously in operation this confirmed the last customer concern.

All Components were checked as well as the wiring which were all fine. The last part of the system was the Telematics module (TCU) which is basically the car’s modem connecting it to the internet and other services. It has several functions but one is its ability to remotely start the car from the JLR app.

This being so it makes the module part of the cars immobiliser system. With us being SERMI approved we were able to program a new module and get the car back on the road.

Busy start to the week already.

2022 110 Urban in for full service and MOT prep. Several issues identified and rebooked for rectification

2023 110 in for transfer box service, HP EGR sensor replacement and repair of its DLR lamp. (Was that busy i forgot to picture that repair process).

2023 L460 for all brakes, rear tyres and front wipers…… can anyone comment what’s special about the wipe blades on the new shape Range Rovers?

Unfortunately the world if full of those who aim to achieve gains without the effort the rest of us put in.

Just seen this post on a selling page i was a member of. Its a recent post of ours altered and claiming to offer a v6 engine for a pittance. Clearly a scam, even worse is the account posting it is the pages admin.

Reported to Facebook who have done nothing so please jump on this a report as many times as you can to get their account and fraudulent page disabled

We believe in using the best parts for the job.
Sometimes this means not having them available the same day…...

We had a situation when 3 defenders were presented within a couple weeks of each other, all needing transmissions. Having been bitten in the past with alternatives we gave the customers the option of using the best and waiting for it or an off the shelf alternative. The first customer was without their family car and opted for the off the shelf option purely to keep mobile. Well, when it came the next day it was found to be far from suitable to be fitted in any vehicle so was sent back. This was disappointing for them as well as us but cemented the fact that not all reconditioned units are the same.

Fast forward a few weeks and winchestergears delivered a box full of beautifully reconditioned units. One R380 and the MT82 were fitted the same day of delivery to the two immobile cars that were ready stripped in the workshop. Both fitted with LOF Clutches - Heavy Duty 4x4 Clutches and a LOF output shaft on the MT82

The remaining R380 and transfer case being fitted this coming week on the the last car that was able to keep limping about on its factory fitted unit after 170k miles.

Black discovery? Yeah completed it mate 😝 5 snuggled up in the workshop last night. And a brace of defenders.

This car is a perfect example of how a well maintained car driven correctly can be carbon free on the intake system after 150k and 12yrs of driving.

All the emissions systems are intact from the factory meeting euro 5.

It’s currently up with us from France as a returning customer having inlet manifold work as well as a full service, front arms and rear prop that were picked up last time we saw it.

Bit of a PSA first……. With the current economic climate we have absorbed many price increases recently. That said we have to increase our labour rate by £15+vat/hr. This isn’t a finger in the air figure but carefully calculated from all our current and upcoming overheads. This will take place from the 1st May.

All estimates that haven’t expired and booked work in the diary will stay at the old rate.

Now onto the pictures…….

This 2018 L494 has just had a JLR crate engine fitted with all the associated parts required to uphold its 2yr JLR warranty. On top of this were a pair of brand new OEM turbos due to oil starvation and and a throttle body due to it sticking. Luckily all the fuel injectors were ok after being sent to a diesel specialist to test as we have always done with any engine job we have done.

Anyway a couple smaller jobs to finish the week and then we have a long weekend ready to complete next weeks work 😁

Another LOF clutch and output shaft fitted to a 90 tdci this week.

Along with a pair of the solid rear halfshafts transforms the way these defenders drive. With nearly all the backlash in the driveline removed it makes for a much nicer driving vehicle.

Two more kits in stock for upcoming jobs. LOF Clutches - Heavy Duty 4x4 Clutches

SERMI (Security-related Vehicle Repair and Maintenance Information).

Launched in the UK on the 1st of April across many vehicle manufacturers but most importantly for us JLR. This system basically is a more refined version of the old JLR security acceleration we had to pass to enable us to have access to security related software.

For example, Key programming, KVM programming, Body control module programming, Engine control unit updates. Basically anything electronic systems used by the vehicle to prevent the car being driven away by a thief.

We have this accreditation and are able to offer all the services we did before the 1st of April……….

So what’s changed?

Not a lot for the customer……. But one thing we are obliged to do to keep this accreditation is keep records of any vehicle we perform security related programming on. For 5 years! Most of this information we already collect. But now we require a copy of the vehicles V5 and a copy of the owner ID including the address. Digital copies are fine as long as all information is perfectly legible. If its a Lease, Fleet or Hire vehicle we need a copy of the relevant agreement between yourself and the registered keeper

Any job we know will need this before booking we will request this information during the booking. But the most common requirement for this is engine software updates. This is usually triggered from diagnosing an issue with the car so we would then require these documents before we could proceed with the repair.

Lots and lots of extra paperwork and checks and procedures. But at the end of the day we cannot operate without it.

The main aim of SERMI is to combat of the criminals and make it harder for them to give stolen vehicles new identifications, program keys to stolen cars ect.

The annoying thing is main dealers don’t have to do this….. and only us independents have to follow this processes. So this is the main aim of this post. To educate customers why we will be asking for more personal information than we ever have and also why the week before a recall or warranty job the main agent did didn’t require this.
